Default VW Jetta to take on SX4,Verna,NHC

If skoda plan to launch the fabia for around 7-8 lakhs then they do not have to look anywhere else but within the family itself for a competitor.
VW plan to launch the Jetta here and a diesel sedan could do wonders here. What's interesting is they plan to launch the jetta with the same 1.9tdi which comes in the octavia, apart from a 1.6L petrol engine as well.Car expected in 2008.

Quote:
Andreas Prinz, managing director, Volkswagen India, told Business Standard the mid-size car would be priced competitively, aligned with the likes of the Honda City. This places it in the Rs 7 lakh to Rs 9 lakh bracket, which has models like the Hyundai Verna, the Maruti Suzuki SX4 and the Ford Fiesta

Based on the A5 Golf platform (also the basis of the Skoda Laura), the Volkswagen Jetta is a Golf hatchback with a boot but with better quality interiors and trim.

For diesel engines, the company might borrow the 1.9-litre TDI engine from Skoda, as found in its Octavia model in India. The Euro III ready engine will allow Volkswagen to price the car competitively and keep it on a par with the likes of the Hyundai Verna CRDi. The company is likely to opt for a 1.6-litre engine as part of its petrol line-up, using its patented FSI technology. The company might adopt different trim models with top-end versions of petrol and diesel featuring anti-lock braking system and airbags as standard

Hmmm, the car that shares platform with the Laura, having the 1.9 TDi from the Octavia, from a company that hasn't done much localisation of parts costing, 7-9L?

Seems hard to belive. but if that is the case, Octavia and Fabia are going to be hammered!

Those are 17inchers? Impossible to sell for 7lac or even 8lac OTR. 8.5 OTR starting for petrol is more of what they can think of.

A high quality and well built car and if priced correctly.....

However, the 'Skoda effect' will be present: It WILL be pretty costly to carry out routine servicing and in case of accidents etc, WILL be very expensive to repair.

As the old saying goes: It PROBABLY won't go wrong, but if it DOES....!!!

With Suzuki setting the baseline for cheap maintenance costs and other manufacturers like Hyundai (and lately, GM) following suit, IMHO Indian consumers will think a lot before buying a car with a reputation of costly servicing.

Default 17" not stock

JKDas,

Don't think the 17 inchers are stock. I have seen quite a few Jettas on the roads but can't seem to remember tyres this big. I would have remembered - they are huge!

This pic maybe of a souped-up limited edition one.

But even then it's a lot lesser than the Laura. Strange times indeed for VAG in India.

VW Golf/Jetta = quality. Now, are they going to strip it clean, add el cheapo plastics/fiitings and plonk in an outdated TDi engine to match the SX4? In that case, they are bringing in just the 'Jetta' name tag and little else.

I would prefer if they brought in the Jetta with the same quality that makes it a household name in europe. And no hand-me-down TDis please. It would be more than a match for the Civic and the upcoming new Corolla.

i have a strong feeling the car would not be like the european version, but a stripped down version. the car would be in the 9-11 lacs bracket, if they are priceing the fabia at 6-7 lacs they wont have two of their own cars at the same price brackets give n take a lac. they would be killing their own car the fabia.

Suggest you guys wait for Frankfurt show in a few weeks when VW reveal their 'el cheapo" car.

The A4 platform is a legacy of Dr Piech - expensive to produce but an engineer's delight. VW are working hard to cut costs and bring out a Golf 6 ahead of time. Nt much money is being made on the Golf at present

yes, considering the fact that jetta is based on the laura i wouldnt expect jetta to be below 18-20(unless they stop selling laura).cause other wise the two brands will clash..ofcourse if they locally produce this car they can manage at a range of 9-11,but for that they have to get rid of skoda brand for good(with such plans i dont think skoda and VW can coexist)

Also, isn't Skoda 1.9 Tdi an old engine? Only 92 bhp and low on refinement and NVH levels compared to the new engines especially the PD one. I dont expect VW to plonk the old technology engine in 2008 model car, where the market is pampered with refined DDis and TCDi engines

VW Jetta to take on SX4,Verna,NHC

So where does it leave the Polo based sedan ? VW were making noises that after the Passat, it would be a Polo based mid-sizer or an entry level C segmenter (call it what you will).

Can the VW "Jetta" be this one ?

that is one thing, and the reason i dont think VW jetta cannot come below a price tag of 20 lac is because of the following cases which suggest that VW wants to emerge as a LUXURY car maker
if we look at th these 4 VWs..
1>beetle is as expensive as minicooper(18-22)

2>passat based on superb(25-30)(competing with C,3series and its own A4)

3>VW toureg(50-65)(competing with its very own cayene)

4>VW phaeton W12(80 lac or more i believe)(competing with its very own a8,then the S,7seriesetc)

now if passat which is based on Superb is sold for a higher price than superb
then why will they sell jetta for a lower price than the laura

There will be a lot changes to "adapt to indian conditions" including the tyres and suspension.

The one launched here will be different and probably to meet the pricepoint too.
