As i had imagined some would welcome my comparism and some would not.
i'm not here to convince anybody. everybody is entitled to their opinion.
I Just want some info on Esteems.
Right now i got an offer of 90 grand on a 1996 model.
Is that the market price? Or can you get it cheaper.
its done about 32,000 kms(which i doubt!! more like 132K kms) Or the car is hardly used which is bad aswell.
How long will the engine last. will it give me problems?
What about body work...i have noticed cars seem to rust in india..Guess its basically the humidity...but how many years before this rusting takes place. According to the owner of the Esteem, The car tops out at 180 as he has removed the limiter. Is that possible?
Does Removing the limiter mean it can do engine damage due to RPM variations.

Whiteknight i have seen your pics...i can see you got an esteem yourself.
enlighten me with your experience.

My mate in bombay has told me at local pumps they sell cars for 50K.
from the outside they are in top condition he says.
He attempted to buy one himself and said the ride was good.
But then he decided to go for a new swift...so if i decide to check out those vehicles are they any good? Or just a scam. I know bombays got alot of scam happening there.

OK i didnt know that there is a car similar in looks to the esteem that is called the M1000. I heard of it but similar in looks? wow.
anyway i do understand your Hiring theology, it does make sense, But in goa, especially during Xmas time, nothing comes cheap. the cheapest arrangement i got was 38 thousand for a M800 for a month.
I think i maybe able to buy that car for 38 grand if i'm not mistaken.
The problem is i travel in Peak holiday time as i work thru da rest of the year, like you guys.
For the last couple of years I have had the luxury or borrowing my friends mahindra until he sold it and moved to canada.
I dont mind Cielo or Opel Astra or Peugeot 309 or Uno.
But if something happens to those cars where will i get parts.
I hear Chevrolet is going to look after matiz owners due to them buying Daewoo. does dat mean a Cielo will also be looked at?

I have alot of questions like...
If i buy a car like a Cielo or Astra. Besides da fact spares are hard to find.
If i replace the engine are there any specific engines that can replace the current one?
Like a 1.5 engine from an old honda city?
I will look to replace the engine eventually but will the specifications, shaft dimensions, all dat crap...

96' esteem should be a carb. There is no speed limiter.

Please specify where is your base. I presume you are in Mumbai. Esteem prices there are kind of rock bottom. You got to understand used car prices varies from city to city. So my suggestion is to get a local automobile expert whom you can trust. If you try to make it alone, chances are that you may get a lemon.

Not sure about the speed claim. I think there is a fuel cut off around 6800 rpm. Anyway no sane guy would try that speed on a stock Esteem on the road.

the esteem does not have a speed limiter espesially a carburated one. i had one so i know. you could touch 180 in it but with great difficulty. i had had mine modified and she would do it with ease.

hey ronald, do not go in for the cars you mentioned , all are cheap to buy but to maintain they are a headache, stick to esteem, cars in the coastal region will have problem of rust, it depends on the user when this rust starts....you should get esteems for as low as 75k or even less,it depend on once luck. try cars from area like pune if you have any contacts there, cause there in close to no humidity there so no rust problem...or else try the used car market in goa , they have good deals but on higher side, and cars come with year warranty....

Ofcourse people do not agree with you because you are comparing Indian used car market with foreign used car market which is like comparing apples to oranges. In the developed west, the new car market is huge and cars are cheap, so many change cars 3-4 years and the cars they discard flood the used car market at cheap prices. Not so in India, people keep cars for generations and even if the trend is changing recently, it is not on par with west. There are other market related reasons as well which I will not go into.

Anyway, good luck with your esteem search.

[quote=Mayavi;548107]Know what the difference between a 325i and a 330i?

Hmmm...good question from the looks basically not much..maybe a design difference.
but from the engine point of view, I think they both use the same engine 325i uses a 1 stage intake and a 330i uses a 3 stage intake, while a 328i would use a 2 stage intake.

So u mean to say besides the engine the Esteem and the M100 are carbon copys...NICE..

I am basically looking for a car in Mumbai and Bangalore.
I have checked out a cielo in Goa for 50K. Its MH registered but the dude lives in Goa.
I have asked him to send me pics of the car, so if my 1st impression is good i can go further and test drive it and buy it when i'm down.
I have read alot of reviews on Cielo. Owners seem to be happy.
besides the occasional plug here and there, its very tough apparently.

btw did you know they still sell Daewoo in romania...how outdated is that??

Anyway been reading alot on the new car market in India, its just awesome with all the brands there. Wish our roads were better.

The better part is India has no speed limit...unlike the rest of the scrummy world...I cant drive over 90mph...rules suck...U guys test drive the **** outta cars der...

anyway thanks for the info...will keep this updated if i find some good deals..

Speedlimits in India are self imposed by the roads.
