Default Mahindra to develop an automatic transmission for Scorpio EDIT: Pictures on Page 2

Here's the plans from their Q1 results:

Quote:
M&M has proposed to spend Rs 6,400 crore in the next three years. The amount will be spent on expansion of capacities and research and development and product development.

Mahindra is developing an automatic transmission for its scorpio to facilitate its foray into US market(where margins are higher). Mahindra is also developing a hydrogen powered scorpio regarding the same. Mahindra aims to quadruple exports and double domestic sales by 2010, with four new platforms and 10 new product launches.

On the domestic front Mahindra will roll out 2.2L Scorpio eagle in this year. Mahindra also plans to rival Tata motors by making trucks and buses with a unit of Navistar Inc. Mahindra is investing around 2000crore rupees for a manufacturing plant in chennai in alliance with Renault - Nissan. But Mahindra refused to participate in Renault’s low cost project citing poor margins

One related question, mods please move question to appropriate place if you required.

After availability of automatic transmission, what will be the difference in performance of a scorpio (or rather any other vehicle) vis-a-vis manual transmission, assuming the engine is kept same. Say in terms on mileage, pickup, maintenance and other parameters that may get affected by this change.

I am not an expert on automobiles but I suspect there will be some tuning done to the engine so that mating with the new gear box is smooth, this means that pick up will also change.

This is strange. M&M says margins in US market is higher. And we TBHPians say that car prices in India are higher. IF prices here are higher, margins here ought be higher, no?

I've heard that M&M is benefiting from lot of reverse brain-drain. All that brain is showing in all these new reasearch initiatives. Hope they succeed in this positive trend.

Hope that the new slushboxes have paddleshifts from day 1 otherwise it wont make much sense having backdated automatics.

Neat! Original plan, from what I read, was to outsource the slush-boxes from someone else. Good to hear that the outsourcing is only a stop-gap and they will eventually market their own. It may be offered in India too. How many automatic SUVs are sold this side of 10 lacs?

GTO, with the auto option, there is no way they would sell it at less than 10 lakhs. If they do, they would be going against the mentality of the Indian auto manufacturer.

It makes more sense for Mahindra to buyout an existing design. The rest of the world is going to DSGs and it dosent make sense to put money in a dying technology.

Default has it been launched?

Saw auto transmission variant of mHawk Scorpio Vlx on pune roads today. It had 'At' written on back door & had 'automatic transmission' badging on side doors. It had temporary TC registration of MH 15 (Nashik) & was green in colour, didn't look like a test vehicle.

Has Scorpio with auto transmission been launched, website doesn't seem to indicate that.

moderators - could find any other thread for Scorpio AT, hence updated this thread. Move if it's being discussed elsewhere.
