| Guys, check out this news Item from the Business Standard today. I think this is the new 'Beetle' car that might come to India. According to the report its even smaller than the Maruti Alto (by 45mm) and will be priced very similar to it. But it gonna come in only by early 2011. A long wait indeed! | This is going to be a re-creation of the old Beetle (concept) I guess. It's not necessary the car should have design similarities with the old one. The concept of people's car or a car for the masses is what going to be the main objective of this car, I suppose. That sounds good. If it can be produced locally and sold at a price close to the Alto/800 there're going to be lots of takers. But how is VW going to achieve this in India? Currently, they don't have a good capable plant to produce these cars here. To keep down the price, local manufacturing is very much necessary. Local content should be high too. That means a lot of local staff and workers also. And VW is almost nowhere in these departments. They also need to spread their distributor network and have lots of showrooms in every city thru out the country. Yes, this is all achievable! But the point is, It's not going to happen in a year or 2 atleast. 2011, as hinted in one of the links above seems correct. By then, what will the world come to? MSIL (formerly MUL) will certainly have something similar to this and so will TATA and Toyota etc... It's not going to be an easy walk for the 'New Old Beetle'! Huh! Am I being too pessimistic? ![]() |

| BHPian | I saw one near my house, wifey told me that the driver was Lucky Ali (Had a guitar and some other traveling stuff packed in the rear, of the car). The car looked awesome, and don’t be fooled by the name Mini. Its got SOME on road presence.
