@blasŤ. Does it mean that practical cars cannot become desirable?
Sorry! But your post seemed to be saying so.

What these "surprised" people are trying to suggest is that Maruti cars are more of a practical choice rather than an enthusiasts choice. In other words, according to them, people buy Maruti more for its mileage, A.S.S rather than performance/fun to drive factor.

Ofcourse, these people have never driven a Baleno, or Esteem, the erstwhile Zen, or the Alto 1.1.

More than anything or anyone, it is a statement about where India is as a car buying nation at present. That Marutis are the 'most preferred' cars only shows that most Indians have their heads screwed on right.
Sensible, practical, affordable, very good support, 'sunder, sasta & tikaaoo' solution. Very good mix of the best of 2 worlds.
The Lamborghinis and porsches can wait.
IMHO. Missiles not welcome!

I am NOT in IT but also use a Maruti.
Why does this thread speak of IT only? Why not a lot of other professions?
Is it being implied that IT employees are somewhat more 'savvy' or better at selecting the best cars? Or that for some reason they are the best benchmark?
I fail to see the rational behind this exercise. What exactly is being established? That IT nerds have no clue to which cars to buy?!

Here is the "progress report" w.r.to car ownership expected from an IT employee in Bangy.

Alto/Santro->Swift->NHC/Innova->Civic/?

The percentage breakup is approximately at about

20/20, 25, 15/5, 5. Remaining 10% will be the odd ones out! (Ford, GM etc)

As you can see there is really no competion in mid-level (Swift) and Maruti takes the cake here. Entry level is not that easy for Maruti and upper levels are unreacheable due to "snob value" issues.

This thread is based on an article appeared as mentioned earlier and also includes Financial services domain. And ofcourse, being an online forum, a good number of the members here also will be from the IT industry, hence the "perceived" bias.

Regarding IT nerds having no clue, maybe you are getting too close there...

I think IT guys will be more exposed to online communities like tbhp where a lot of factors are being discussed. So they will be more nearer to a correct and wise decision towards buying which car, than those who are not exposed much to the online communities and are relying upon friends/magazines etc.

Well I am in IT and I drive Palio 1.6. My previous car was Deawoo Matiz.

I have seen many Maruti in in parking lot of the IT complex. But what I see is most of them are 2 yrs old and above. Well there are couple of (not many)SX4 Zxi also.

Now a days the most visible brand is Hyundai in Parking lots and ohh yes even 2 elantras and a old sonata.

I do see Chevy optras, Aveos, Ford Fiestas, flairs, Fusion also saw a 1.6 stile also.

So I am not sure what data Maruti uses and how they collect the data. May be few calls to new buyers and then employed few boys to stand at the entry gate of IT complexes.

We will not be surprised if Hyundai comes up with another statistics as well accepted in techies.

Do people really consider this data before buying? I am not saying that they dont, but few must be considering not all.

Well this is a fact, even in Maruti cars if the count is done most of the cars would be Alto(Which is the my case as well ).

From my observation most common buys from IT guys are Alto & Santro, Indica comes 3rd

I belive they did a research to find what is the percentage of people from a particular job sector.

I belive the results should be similar for Govt Employees

Sorry I dont see that happening to 'most' people in IT. In fact hardly do I find such perk
