| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | Read in the Hindustan Times today that Public and Commercial vehicles in Maharastra will now be electronically limited to 65 kmph. As usual the unions are not happy and argue that as it is trucks and tempos cannot go over 65 kmph on the roads but the argument for the speed limiter is the aim of reducing accidents in the state. Last year 11000 deaths were reported and this is a way to reduce those accidents. Views ??

| Senior - BHPian | A better way to curb rash driving would be to introduce rev limiters instead of speed limiters. A bus can be rash driven at 30kmph too in 2nd or 3rd gear. The above was done in chennai PTC buses way back in the 80s & withdrawn due to popular demand (Only from the drivers)

| Senior - BHPian | more than the speed limiter, i think what would help is teaching the drivers a little road sense. you also have the menace of drinking and driveing that goes on due to the long hours spent on the road. the drivers also should be taught how to respect others on the road even though they are smaller in size. with the unions not takeing a likeing to this new rule i doubt that all the trucks and busses would get fitted with speed limiters. this would only mean more fuel being burnt and longer time spent on the road by the drivers. this is not a good thing for the transporters and truck owners. am sure they would come up with some way to get around this new rule.

| Some more money for the cops - that is the sole reason why new traffic rules are introduced in Maharahstra. If you have noticed, no lorry (especially the construction lorries) retain their rear bumper (or restraint bar) and seldom have tail lights - but o one gets booked, they have to pay their way through. The situation is such that if you are a commercial vehicle you end up paying the cops for something or the other, so what is the incentive for these guys to be law-abiding?

| Team-BHP Support ![]() | One of those gargantuan measures enforced every now and then on State Transport companies. That the speed governors are removed by the drivers is another matter. But these moves negate the utility of fast buses like Volvos unfortunately. With trucks its a non-issue. They're so overloaded that they cant drive in anything but 1st gear anyway.

| Senior - BHPian | This is an aspect most ignored by the operators as well as the public. There is a lot of drunk driving on city/mofussil transports. I have seen on KSRTC buses running between bangalore & attibelle, the crew drop into the bar on the border between TN & karnataka & take some wild swigs before starting on their return journey.

| Has the government heard of something called Proper and Strict licensing issuing system? They can do what they want but the only way to reduce road accidents is by doing a complete overhaul of the RTO and the traffic department. But then it's typical of India where the government and it's employee's believe that they can never be wrong and everything is the fault of the people. You can open up the economy and do what you want but this "Mai Baap" attitude will never ever go. IMO every government official must be ordered to see Air Crash investigation on Nat Geo. The way every accident is investigated is amazing. Over here it's always "rash and negligent driving" if it's a road accident, "pilot error" or "ATC error" if it's a air crash or "human error" if it's a rail accident.

| I now think govt should organize a firing squad for call center cab owners and schedulers. Its because of the mad hours that makes the call center cabs such killers. ditto for volvos. and blueline bus owners - the CNG queues have ensured that drivers get even less sleep :( everytime i see a dominos' deliver boy almost risking his life for that 30 min deadline my gut wrenches. Dominos is bothered only about keeping pizzas hot - not even a slight jacket for their delivery boys (who actually get them the business) for their protection. amit you must be joking, do you think any of the government official has the time to sit through a TV programme. if you do ask them to watch AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS the guy would just laugh at you or ask you if he would get paid to watch it. none of it would be used in the real world for a car accident. if they go to follow these prcedures accident files lyeing on their tables would increase two folds. . for a few hundred bucks the car is passed with the limiters shown as working. you dont even have to have one sometimes.
