I agree with nitrous.

With some luck this could go the way of high tech number plates and never see light of day

This ministry of urban development seems to be in overdrive mode. Arent they the ones who proposed the 8% cess?? Their mission should be to ensure that RTO implements stricter rules for DL issuance in the first place.

Annual DL renewal sounds ridiculous. Now the RTO and the traffic cops will have additional sources of income.

gr8 idea... why not reduce the validity to a day like one way travel ticket in buses and trains. Take a driving ticket and then travel by your car.

how would computerization matter if challans are not issued at all?

I am worried if they get more crazier like what happened with the helmet rule in Tamilnadu. Ladies and children need not wear helmets. So may be only 4 wheeler licenses need to renewed every year at a higher cost and two wheelers will be spared!

Am psyched up!

Well, this is good in some ways, and bad in a few. Of course, the 'Good' senario is hypothetical, since it'll never happen.
Good, since this is a way for the RTO to keep a check on drivers, and it might help filter out a bunch of irresponsible drivers. It increases their revenue,so maybe it'll pave way for better technology to be implemented. Probably have better speed detectors;or increase the ways to crack down on drivers without licenses. It would probably help the traffic cops,if they are paid better they might work better.

Bad,since this really is a hassle to do. If the renewal cana be done online, from home or work, and if the process is a simple one, then its worth it. I agree that the time period ought to have been atleast 3-5 years.

Finally,i dont see anything being done. With all the debate between politicians/the Govt, and a whole lot of corruption, this law won't see the daylight for the next 20 years!

I can imagine long long long queue in front of RTOs. Already for new license there is such a long queue and now with this... Think of old age people, women... god only knows...

For a country with such a huge population and with so much of corruption this is just unthinkable!

We are the people who are lazy to stand in line for voting during elections which is once in 5 years and now we will be made to stand in the line every year! Better we stand in voting queue and save ourself! What say?

If the whole point of making rules and implementing them is to increase the standard of life and quality of behaviour among individuals in a society, its really really worth. Having so many rules and regulations and penalties already existing in this country, but 80% of them being corrupted and misused in every way possible, what more can a new rule contribute here ?

Transport Dept is one of the most corrupted division of the ministry in every state. There is literally no other department that can be utilised for minting money without any effort. Everyone who has a driving license know how the whole process of licensing, vehicle registration and every related stuff work in the department. Nothing is hidden from the public these days, and surprisingly most of these curruptions are accepted as standard by the public too. Thats even more dangerous.

Renewal of DL every year will be throwing money out of our pockets for no reason. After paying heavy Road Tax, 12.5% tax on even a safety pin, edu cess, service tax, surcharge and many other indirect form of paying extra for every usable thing in the world, topped up by the annual income tax, this country can not improve ??

Now when the situation is like this: where can we expect the petty collection of DL renewal money to go ? Serious thoughts for the citizens. Half the time people are not aware of things happening around !! Remaining half the time crowd acts like a brainless donkey. Even if there are many such fees, renewals, new payment rules coming up, public would just pay them and not even think about what it is meant for !! No exaggerations, its India !

We are missing out on one part, the renewal need not have to be done if there is no outstanding traffic offense against the driver

Quote:
The renewal process would be automatic, if there is no outstanding issue against the driver relating to violation of traffic rules.

They also need to collect the renewal fees i.e. for extra funds, so renewal will be done for all but it has to be online with people paying fines and fee and and renewed license being dispatched to their address, just like you get the credit card when the current one is about to expire.
