Default What was your first 'new car'?

Some pleasures, I would imagine must be very dear and rare to our Team-BHPians.

The pleasure of:
  • making a lump sum full payment for a brand new car without loan nor financing.
  • having the dealer call, "Sir, your brand new car is ready for delivery. When would you visit our showroom and collect it?". And reaching the showroom and driving it out all smelling of new car, gleaming in the happy sunshine.
The very first time, I enjoyed this pleasure was in March 1988, when as a proud thirty-year old software engineer, I took delivery of my gleaming moss grey Mahindra MM540DP 4x4 with light grey vinyl soft top, from Metro Motors, Opera House, Bombay.

What an intense experience it was at last, to climb into the cabin, sit on the still polythene covered black and houndstooth seat, crank up the brand new 2112 cc diesel, creep down the ramp onto Hughes road and turn left towards Kemp's Corner.

Do share your first new car experience.
Even accompanying dad or brother to the showroom to collect their new car... chalegaa!

MAY 23rd 1997, White Maruti 800, Mandovi Motors, Bangalore.
The first experience was & is the best one, The only difference with the new purchases would be the additional stakeholders....in the form of growing family.

Smile 800

hmm..... "brand new"..... It was a Metallic Silver Maruti 800 DX. Took delivery of that in 96-Feb. Me and bro went together to drive it out from the showroom! Straight to tyre shop to replace the tyres with Goodyear GPS 2 Radials! No words will do justice if I start to narrate the story and feelings! WOW!! thatz it!
I graduated to this from a 90-May second hand Maruti Omni with all the bling lights all over it!!

Before that in college days it was a 81-Aug Bullet 350!! I still have it!!

Brand new car for me,would be my 2004 Mazda 3. Took a test drive, and fell in love with it. Got into the office, and sat talking about the price & financing. For weeks at end,I'd in front of the car, admiring ever little bit of it.

My very 1st car was a 1993 Mazda Protege, and this year we got a 2004 Kia Optima..and guess what?? In all probability,I'll be heading to the Mitsubishi dealership this weekend to trade the Kia in for a 2008 Lancer GTS.

August 1997 with a Maruti 800, after owning 3 used cars it was special. Very next month the 800 got re-styled and started looking ugly.

My 1st car was an Alto LXi and I loved her to death. I became the proud owner of her in April 2004.

Felt really nice to have paid my hard earned money and my folks appreciating it. Dad had never let me drive his car from the time I started earning in 2001.

After trading off my pre-owned Matiz, got Palio 1.6 in 1st Nov 2006.

I guess mine was a unique delivery Shaman Auto could have made. I visited the showroom on 1 promised date and did not get the car due to some problem in system (what they said). I was furious. They promised another date (01/11/2006), gave some crap reason at 7.00 pm and said cannot deliver. I told them "Keep that car for you, I dont want, I will come tomorrow for refund".

AND the sales manager took the car himself and delivered it to my door step on the same date at 11.50 pm just to keep up with the date.

I think this might be the unique case you might have come across, so I can say Dealer went through labour pain at 7.00 pm and delivered the baby at 11.50 pm.

So this episod gives her a special place in my life.

On 10 Sep 2004, I was handed over the keys of the Ford Ikon 1.6 ZXi, first new car that I could call completely my own. A car that I had been saving up for since joining my job, but then I actually wanted a different make and a different model.

Failure on the manufacturers part of my original intended models took me to Ford. One of those manufacturers was in the process of providing me with a car for the previous 4 months.

But then, at the time of writing the cheque,I was told I was getting the car the third day, from there, it went upto a whole 10 days as there were few goof-ups regarding registration, fitment of the spoiler/skirting. In the end I just drove the car from the showroom to our home with only the invoice and insurance papers. The car ran out of petrol in reaching the nearest petrol pump. Moreover the windshield had a huge wiper mark on it.

Did it actually make me savour that pristine moment. Well, I was so fed up, that the moment was lost on me. On top of it Dad was blasting the 1100D through traffic while I was seated scared behind the steering wheel of a brand new car.

My home location is notorious for having rickshaws, cycles and what not. In the end it was quite an achievement parking the car in the garage. However as soon as the car was set for parking we had a cable fault covering the area into complete darkness.

Fantastic start, for people who did not support me in buying a black car. But who cares the 1100d was also black.
