Default Swift "Dezire" to replace Esteem. EDIT : PICS on Pg.4 !!

There's a piece in today's Times of India saying Maruti is stopping production of the Esteem once their plant comes back up on 2nd January. The car is to be replaced by the Swift Sedan, initially to be made available with a 1.3 litre petrol with the possibility of a diesel version at a later date. Reportedly the Esteem sold 1000 units in November.

Does the Swift sedan have the same engine as the hatchback (which has the same engine as the Esteem)? We can expect the sedan to be heavier than the hatch, which in turn is heavier than the Esteem. If the engine is the same, the sedan will be more sluggish than the hatch.

R.I.P. Esteem earlier known as the Maruti 1000.

I think it came out in 1990 and 17 years is long enough for any model - post Amby & FIAT that is. It is time that the old 1300cc engine (also around for well over a decade, though modified with 16V and MPFI) is also replaced with something better. I only wish it will be another Alloy engine, since Maruti Alloy Blocks have always been a treat - Esteem, Zen, Baleno and now SX4.

Wasn't it that the Esteem production was stopped way back in Oct-Nov '07. Now, what does this mean.

MUL is like trying its level best so that no car remains with the dealers as if it would have announced the discountinuation of Esteem in Nov only then the sales would hv been affected more drastically.

Anyways, a tribute to the greates ever family Car!

Hope Maruti gives a peppy car as a fit replacement for the Esteem.

Right, MUL person told me around a month back that Esteem production is already stopped.

Fat chance. The Swift sedan, will weigh around 1100 kgs. Powered by the G13BB, one can easily calculate the performance slump when compared to the 875 kg Esteem. Expect it to crack the ton in about 14 odd, with a top whack of around 165 kays. (compared to the mid-11 ton sprint by the esteem, one would hardly call it "performance").

There's no doubt that the esteem replacement will sell. Maruti targets 3000 units plus for the new car.

Let us spare a moment of silence for the days gone by when we saw the likes of the Miura, EB110 & Sratos....

That shows the amount of confidence and trust this great car has inspired in people over the years with its characteristic aplomb. Kudos to this awesome machine that deserves a glorious tribute and graceful exit.

G13B?

That should retire. What about the M series stuff? Heard that was coming first in the Sedan and then only hatch.

Good point Veyron. For the same reason it will also affect the FE. I guess the days of featherweight cars are over.

PS: Some of the performance can be recovered in gearing but I doubt Maruti will do that because it will kill FE further. They need to come out with new tech like Honda's I-dsi if they want to maintain FE.

But 165 kays is the esteems top speed so how can the heavier swift sedan with the same motor do the same top speed?
