No mate, Navpreet isn't kidding. Infact we have the same system in Punjab & Chandgarh. These prices are minimum for the numbers & if more than 1 applicant has applied for a particular number, that number is auctioned. We got no. 0008 for 50K in Chandigarh for my cousin's car .I also remember someone shelling out 5.25 lakh for no.1 in CH03S series & 1.45 lakh for PB10 series

In pondicherry too, the RTO is following the same method. but the official price for numbers like 1111, 2222...,(all 4 digits same number), 2345, 3456, 4567 etc are Rs 5000.
rest numbers if u want to book in advance u have to PAY Rs 3000. no idea about numbers 1-9. all official. one has to go to CMs office, select the numbers available in the list and pay the amount in RTO, which is valid for 3 months. befor that u have get ur vehicle registered. politicians/ influential persons will unofficially book their favorite number before the next series is available.

Simple and easy.
This way has come into effect due to a very very sad mishap which happened sometime back.
the RTO was under pressure from various political groups and the trend was that the CM used to book the first 10 numbers in every series.
Later he started getting threats for booking numbers.
Poor guy had a heart attack in which he passed away.
Since then this rule has been put to effect.
i think the system was first introduced in AP by the then CM chandrababu naidu (~1998) and he announced that all the funds from fancy number booking will go to CMs relief fund. nice initiative. and many states followed this.

guys
i think if you want a good number for your car, paying a fee(Rs 5000 etc)is more appropriate.this way the amount you pay becomes a legal amount, and you get a proper reciept of what you pay.this way those who can affford the extra amount will only get the number.this system should be introduced on ALL INDIA BASIS,because i see people who are not able to get good numbers for their cars in DELHI generally get the car registered in HARYANA,where there is no restriction on such numbers and the registration cost is less too.
hence the cost of the number should be same every where.

0001 anywhere in Haryana costs Rs. 1 lac. You'll get the number from the transport deptt. head office at Chandigarh.

booking cannot be done in the authority/rto until and unless you have some source.incase the dealer is willing to provide you the number, you can get it in writing that a specific number would be issued to you according to the sales, for eg if a dealer sells around 300 vehicles per month, then for 4 months waiting you can add 1200 to the current series.
however in this case there can be two problems
1.if the vehicle arrives early,i.e before 4 months, then he will not give you the booked no.
2.if the vehicle arrives late and the number is available for allotment, the dealer may wait for only 2-3 days maximum for your car.

i hope this will help you

Apart from paying Rs 1 Lac for no. 1,you will have to wait at least 6-8 months unless untill you have some high level influence.

As the numbers are limited and people have no qualms paying Rs 1 lac so this has resulted in a waiting list for VIP numbers in haryana.

totally agree with you, since in haryana people are willing to pay, there is a waiting period for the same.
but normal nos, like 1000,8888 etc can be purchased without any waiting.the waiting is generally for nos 1-100.
