I think lurker was refering to the Fabia sales to palio and the Octy/Laura to Linea. People haven't totally lost faith in Fiat there are still a lot of diehard Fiat. I wonder what they see in this Car/Brand .

It's actually simple. Certain people are suckers for euro (car) brands in India.

they will buy Skodas even after umpteen complaints of pi$$ poor after sales service. Similarly they will buy fiat too .. esp nostalgia value.

Renault, Peugeot all will find buyers in India, only caveat is they provide a half-decent product.

I would think twice before buying a fiat, even though i own one and love it to the core, but the way things are going down with the new JV, its scary.

Can I also say most of the people are 'suckers' of Japanese car brands?

This is no way to describe the different liking or tastes of people!
Some may like Euro cars for certain reasons, Jap cars for some reasons, so forth.....!
But, using words like suckers is going too far!

Whoa, in that case, I'd like to be a sucker for an Italian "prancing horse" brand. : Anyone donating a Ferrari?

I think it would be the right thing to do eventually. There is a major scarcity of spares for the Palio at the moment. My car requires a strut mount for the front right side, but its not available either at Shaman or Wasan. They also mention that there are a lot of cars stranded at the workshops for lack of spares. The paucity of spares are for suspension components, steering components, silencers, alternators or even the smaller and less important door beadings, logos, etc.

Want to buy a Fiat again, most probably a GP, but if this is the situation in a metro like Mumbai, I would have to think a zillion times before buying another Fiat.

Any product that has sold a good number will not have problem in spare parts availability. We will have to wait and see how many Punto and Linea Fiat manages to sell. I'm one buying Linea definitely, irrespective of what people suck here

FinneyP i think you misunderstood lurker.
He said "Suckers for" and not Suckers of

Suckers for is an english phrase, meaning, "highly passionate about"

Sam paaji, if you are around, please correct us.

DCeite you have a fair idea of the term.
there is nothing grieveously wrong in being a sucker. For instance I am all set to buy a 09 Megane or Linea whichever is launched in India first. So that makes me a sucker for euro too .. but a sucker nevertheless.

I am going OT, but there are two different sides to a word - Its literal meaning (denotation) and its connotation. Though 'sucker for' means 'highly passionate towards', the connotation is generally negative. I wouldn't be surprised if anyone is offended by the word

Default Will Linea diesel enjoy the excise duty savings

IMO the linea diesel, with its 90 bhp engine will fall under the excise duty cut-off. And so will the future maruti suzuki SX4 diesel with the linea engine.

The central board of excise and customs says

"87.3 Excise duty on small cars [ motor vehicles of length not exceeding 4000 mm and engine capacity not exceeding 1200 cc (Petrol, LPG and CNG) / 1500 cc (Diesel) and falling under heading 8702 or 8703] is being reduced from 16% to 12%. (Sr. No.42 of notification No.6/2006 as substituted vide notification No. 6/2008- C.E refers)."

8702 Motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons 8703 Motor vehicles used for transportation of goods
source: Central Board of Excise and Customs

...........So that might be little savings. 16% - 12% not a big deal huh!

None of them will get any excise benefits. The engine capacity is fine but the length exceeds the prescribed norms.

Some months back an additional duty of between 10,000 and 20,000 was imposed on vehicles with engine size of 1.5 litre and above. IMO the Fiat Linea will bypass that.

True; around June/July this year an additional duty of Rs.15,000 on cars with engine capacity between 1500cc & 1999cc and Rs.20,000 on cars with engine capacity greater than 2000cc was imposed.

The 1.4L petrol version and the 1.3L diesel version will both escape from this additional duty. Some saving ...
