Question Whats the relation between GM, Cheverolet, Opel & Daewoo?

I always keep on hearing about terms like 'parent company', 'subsidary', 'marketed under the brand', etc etc. Why is it that the engine is borrowed from some brand, parent company is some other & the end product is marketed by some third brand name?

Can anyone please clarify the history & also how are the brands GM, Cheverolet, Opel & Daewoo related, both in Indian context and internationally?
