OT::correct me if i am wrong generally the lucky no.is decided with the birth date. so 8 will be lucky for all those who are born on 8th,17th,and 26th.

yes usually that is the case from what i understand. also, there are certain numbers which when added to your number give a number which is considered lucky. 1 & 6 are considered lucky. so for instance i'm born on the 22nd, my no is 4. if i get a car which adds upto 6 for example, the resultant is 10= 1 which is a good number. however if i get a car that adds to 4, then the total is 8 which won't be good.... that's a bare bones explanation of how it's supposed to work.

an 8 number car for an 8 person - 8+8=16=7

i'd imagine that should be good!

I am glad that I am not in TN. I was born on 17th Sept. I lived in house number 35 under Calcutta 26 till my age 35. I joined my first job on 17th May. Our phone number - when I discovered this 8 connection - was 411740 (long ago back in history phone numbers used to be this easy to remember) ! I am convinced 8 is my lucky number.
But I quite accept Esteemlover's take on the system in TN. This is to stop corruption. I am curious to know if his father faced any problem with his two scooters !! I am sure he would have got them after more than 8 years' waiting period.

It is true that the RTO's in Chennai don't give no's totaling to "8". I recently registered my car at TN-18 (Red Hills RTO). Since I asked for a fancy no, I was able to see their register and almost all the nos. that add to "8" have not been used (eg. 8,17,71,800,701,107,8000 etc.). I enquired to the RTO inspector about this and he told they don't issue nos. totaling to "8" because of the common belief in TN that "8" is an unlucky no. No government orders/rules involved. I ended up taking 1515 since it totals to 3 and all our cars and bikes total to 3.

That is weird. I never heard that before, that too coming from an RTO. Will they also ban all cars with 8v engine? That is bad news for Microsoft too. (Win 8)

Strange considering the fact that in many cultures, no. 8 is considered lucky and at times divine too. Add another one to blind-beliefs followed in our country.

An interesting extension to this belief is that even the RTO district numbers that total 8 are not used. Eg. there is TN-07 and TN-09 but no TN-08, no TN-71 etc.

BUT, I guess, if one is particular and wants only a number totalling eight, they will issue it. I recently saw a new car with regn no "8", of the Alandur RTO.

I learnt about this a few months ago in wikipedia and was shocked !!! Mainly because, my life is full of '8' s !!

I was born on 08/08/80 and my 8th birthday was on 08/08/88 and my car number is 818 which totals to 8 again !!

I sometimes wonder whether we are in 21st century or in some 1000-2000 BC . Faith in God and one's self effort can remove every obstacle and numbers have got nothing to do with it. When will our countrymen learn it ?

Sounds ridiculous. 8 has been great to me.
Also, 8 considered lucky by Chinese.

When many have a belief like 'xyz is my lucky number' is common / accepted, i don't see any issue on considering xyz is unlucky (personally i don't have any such belief).

Just a small thing to remind, Maruti 800 (which adds up to 8 numerologically) was the stepping stone for middle class people's affordable small car. It was the king among daily use cars in India. It literally ruled the market for decades. Now thats a nice 8 fact.

It is utter stupidity on the part of a government organisation to promote things like these. My vehicle no totals upto 8, and it happens to be that my b'day is also on 8th. Our RTO in kolkata gave me the number without even being asked to. Maybe its a result of the fact that no one else had taken up that number on that particular date.

The Real Reason 8 is on demand in Tamil Nadu not because of numerology or luck factor but just because AMMA 's preferred vehicle number is 8. As a result many of those in her party and people looking to appease the ruling party have gone on an over drive in booking the number series such as 0008, 0088, 0888 and 8888. Almost the whole of this series has been booked out by AIADMK. Whats funny is sometimes when the mentioned series are not available people try and obtain numbers that totals upto 8.
