There was more rush at PSU than Shell though the price difference is close to two rupees. May be people are not aware of the difference.

I guess you're correct. Many simply are not aware that Shell follows true free-market pricing as opposed to the oil CPSUs. There is a wrong perception among some that Shell fuel is always sold at a premium for its strictly controlled quality (no adulteration) and assured quantity (no "clocked" dispensers). I wish people would fill up only at Shell pumps (as far as possible) and avoid CPSU pumps as long Shell petrol is lower than, equal to, or not more than Re. 1 per litre compared to PSU pumps. It should send a strong signal to the greedy government-oil PSU mafia.

Another reason could be that Shell has most of its pumps in the suburbs and on the outskirts of cities and very few within city limits. To make matters worse, some Shell pumps have downed shutters, reflected by the "temporarily closed" tag on its website. I don't know about Reliance, but some Essar pumps also seem to have shut down for good.

I met an official from Shell during a meeting and came to know that they are waiting for the government to deregulate diesel prices like it was done with petrol.

It seems they are paying huge licence fees for 2000 petrol pumps, whereas they are currently operating only 80 odd pumps. So the diesel price charged by them now is offsetting the licence fees to an extent. When the government deregulates diesel, they can open more pumps and price diesel more competitively at some Rs.50-52 (in Bangalore) and government pumps will also fall in line.

Deregulated diesel price will not be as high as Rs.61 charged currently.

Hope this is true.

Has Shell changed the price too?

I don't think Shell cashed in much when their petrol was cheaper than the PSU outlets. Most people weren't even aware their petrol was almost Rs 2 cheaper.

I filled Shell today without knowing about the petrol price reduction. Shell has not reduced the price.

Shell normal is now 71.95 today morning in Hinjewadi!

I was in Wakad anyway to meet someone, and then decided to take advantage of the lovely weather to ride further up and fill my bike up to the brim with Shell. Pleasantly surprised to see the further drop in prices.
Even on Monday morning when I tanked up the car , I was actually third in line to fill up. This has never happened before , and I was never ever in queue at shell. And all 4-5 pumps there were occupied!

Not a major difference between PSU and Shell. PSU price for normal unleaded is 72.27, I reckon.

Even though the price difference is insignificant ,quality difference definitely is significant between shell and others

Shell unleaded petrol is Rs.76.10 in Bangalore. 30 paise lesser than PSU pumps.
There was a pretty decent sized crowd at the fuel pump on CBI road this evening.
I guess people really see value in quality and better service and quantity. Cheers to Shell!!!

Thanks for the update, my friend. The Shell website is not updated regularly with the latest prices. Considering that the PSUs sell Unleaded at ~ Rs. 72.28, paying 7 p more for a litre of fuel whose quality and quantity is assured is definitely a no-brainer as far as I am concerned!

Three cheers for Shell!
