I spoke to the Volkswagen engineer at the Detroit Auto Show this year and he clarified this point to me.

All recent Volkswagen 1.9 diesel engines are TDi, i.e. they have a turbocharger regardless of whether it is Pumpe Duse or not.

They had introduced the Pumpe Duse injection system in Europe in 2003 (I think) and in North America in 2004, which boosted the horsepower to 100 bhp (from 90) and also increased overall torque.

Then in 2006 they discontinued the Pumpe Duse system and reintroduced the Common Rail injection system on their 1.9 TDi, at least in Europe and North America. He refused to divulge the reason for such a decision, saying that it was an "internal" decision by the powertrain group. However, I think it's mainly due to cost factors as Pumpe Duse (or pump line injector) systems are a lot more expensive than good old Common Rail.

Here's a nice article explaining the differences.

Default VW should just focus on diesels

My suggestion to VW would be to just focus on diesels. Selling a 1.6l petrol for ~13L (which I believe is the ex-showroom price) doesn't make sense.

Also heard that the quality check is going down the drain. We were driving this car here in US in some remote location. It was brand new rental car. About couple of hundreds done. The rear wheel started smoking profusely after going up and down on couple of hills. It looks like some kind of brake pad jam, not sure what was the exact cause.
VW quality is not what it once used to be. These days VW brand is fallen sharply on reliability figures. They are reporting lots of electrical problems.

I guess VW borrowed some dope from Skoda and now both are doing it together. Couldn't have messed their pricing further. I don;t understand how are they positioning Octavia, Laura and now Jetta. They are all hitting the same market and cannibalizing each other's share.

So true! And its not even a decent 1.6 like toyota's vvt-i which puts out 125 hp. this 1.6 is only around a hundred horses aint it?

Thumbs up Jetta launched!

Volkswagen today launched the much anticipated Jetta in India. Known as civic competetior this Jetta is set to trigger another war in the D-segment. This gently looking, solid jetta pretends to be a much bigger car than actually it is. The cabin reflects luxury at any point and complements its exterior styling. Jetta will come with two engine options - 1.6L petrol and 1.9L diesel. The 1.6L petrol engine develops 102PS of peak power and 148Nm of max torque. According to Volkswagen this jetta can reach a top speed of 186 kph and can be accelerated from 0 to 100 kph in just 12.2 seconds. The 1.9L diesel engine cranks out 105PS of max power and 250Nm of peak torque which is available from 1900 rpm.The new jetta might come in three variants - trendline petrol, trendline diesel and comfortline diesel. The comfortline variant of diesel jetta will come with the 6 speed automatic DSG gearbox. Other variants will come with 5 speed manual transmission

Laura? I think you must say Fiesta .

This is the 2005 Jetta. This shouldn't have been introduced anyway. It is giving a wrong impression of VW. The car is screaming for an update already, not a facelift but next generation is needed.

These people think too much about themselves and think that Indian market will pay any amount demanded just for an international badge. 13laksh ex-showroom for this car is utter rubbish and I am sure the market will teach them a lesson.

So what do you guys think should have been the 'ideal pricing for jetta?

I think the petrol should NOT have crossed 9L and the diesel topping out at 10-11L!

P.S. - VW realises its positioning problem. If you see the televesion promo you will realise that they are trying to counter that problem. It shows a 'ordinary' car being 'perceived' as a 'status' car

check it out

Talking

Jetta - "The Jet Set has arrived"

(Delhi) ex-showroom prices:
  • Jetta 1.6L petrol (101BHP) Trendline is Rs12.97 lakh
  • Jetta 1.9L Diesel Trendline is Rs14.22 lakh
  • Jetta 1.9L Diesel Comfortline (DSG ) Rs16.67 lakh
BTW, Jetta Petrol accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 12.2 seconds and Jetta Diesel in just 11.8 seconds, which just around what our Swift does.

People will rather buy Octavia, get more power and save money as well. Or buy Laura.
