Smile Fiat India rolls out first Linea from Ranjangaon plant in Pune

Fiat India Automobiles Ltd, on Friday, commenced production of its Linea sedan at the Ranjangaon plant near Pune.

“We will have around 1200 units of Linea ready by next year,” Rajeev Kapoor, chief executive, Fiat India said, adding that the company expects to sell around 2,500 units every month.

“Rollout of the Linea is the first in a series of steps being taken by the company to revive its brand in India,” said Kapoor. He added that after Linea, the company will launch Grande Punto in the second quarter of 2009. Linea, Grande Punto and Tata X1 sedan will be put together on the same assembly line. “Around 450 cars will be rolled out on a daily basis, in a phased manner. This will include 10-15 Lineas initially,” said a company official.

Fiat’s Linea will be available in three variants: Active being the basic model, and Dynamic and Emotion being higher-end variants. A fourth variant, Emotion Plus, targeted at the premium segment, will be launched later.

The company’s localization, which is currently around 55%, will reach 90 % by December 2009. Linea will be launched with 1.3 litre multi-jet diesel and 1.4 litre petrol engines. The company is planning to fit Emotion Plus with a higher end engine.

In Europe, Linea is available with 1.6 litre petrol and 1.9 litre diesel engines

At present, Fiat’s Ranjangaon plant has an installed capacity of 135,000 cars annually, which can go up to 2 lakh. Currently, there are 60 selling points and the company plans to take up to 100 plus dealers by end of December. “The auto industry is going through its worst crisis and the consumer has become more selective. But we see an opportunity in the slowdown to bring new products into the market. If we have the right product at the right price, we will sell. The challenge is consumer finance,” said Kapoor.

At present, the Ranjangaon plant assembles the Tata Indica in small numbers and also makes around 900 units of Palio a month. Fiat has begun exports of Palio to South Africa.

As indicated earlier, Linea will be priced under Rs 10 Lac.

Linea production has definetly started production at thier Ranjangaon facility on Nov 21st which is going to be the base for its forthcoming Grand Punto and Next generation Tata Indigo.

Production capacity is 1,35,000 and additonall 3,00,000 deivetrains, according to TOI Linea will come in three trims with 1248cc 16 valve multijet diesel & 1368cc 16 valve FIRE petrol both mated to all new C510, 5speed gearbox.

further there is to more than 2000 units waiting at the dealers when the actuall release takes place in the mid-December, IMO Suzuki should take note of this to ramp up production before launching new vehicles to avoid uneccessary booking woes.

Yesterday evening at about 7PM UTV showed us highlights of that Linea drive. The anchor said the car exhibited excellent build quality. On the insides, when she was talking about the very good fit and finish of the dash, the nice retro looking dials blah blah the camera was fixed on her face!

Other things the anchor spoke about:

- Blue&Me.
- the vehicle exhibited perfect balance between ride and handling.
- Lots of features.

So it's now confirmed to be a 1.3 MJD engine.

All 1.6 and 1.9 were just rumors and now out of the window.

btw I too saw that sneak preview and more time was spent showing the anchor's face. The dash looked sparse from what little was shown there.

As I write this, the linea is being shown on UTVi car show

Was mentioning a 1.3 MJD Turbo 90BHP with 12.9 KMPL i city and 17.5 KMPL on highways.

The anchor did mention that ride & handling is just toooooooo good. gave 9/10 points on that.

Car looks promising but the focus of attention on the preview was Ms. Kriplani. I am looking forward to the review by NDTV. Any idea about its pricing? Will it be comparable to the SX4 and Verna?

Great news! So this time it is going to be real! End of long wait!
Obviously they missed the boom time, but a real VFM package could help in these times and hope the Fiat guys price it right.

ok here's the highlights:

1.3 MJD, 90bhp, turbocharged
Excellent Handling
great cornering
but handling does not compromise ride quality
rear a/c vents
ABS
Tilt Steering
rear headroom on lesser side
but comfortable rear sofa
excellent ride that soaks up potholes
short precise gearshift
