Default Jaguar & Land Rover to enter Indian market.

Gaydon, England, 1st May, 2009 - Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed that it is to begin selling its range of premium performance saloon cars and sports utility vehicles in the Indian market later this year and has today reached agreement with Tata Motors Limited to be the exclusive importer.

Jaguar and Land Rover's award-winning vehicles, including Jaguar's XF and XKR and Land Rover's Discovery and Range Rover, are renowned around the world for their unique blend of refined luxury, quality and capability and will now become officially available in this rapidly expanding market.

David Smith, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, said: "We are delighted to be formally entering the Indian market, an economy which is still growing appreciably, and able to offer our premium products to a whole new group of customers. It is an important strategic move for Jaguar Land Rover and will enable us to realise our competitive potential in this significant market."

The newly-formed Premier Car Division, within Tata Motors Passenger Car Business unit, will assume responsibility for the distribution of all Jaguars and Land Rovers in India and is also due to open the first showroom at Ceejay House in Worli, Mumbai, in June this year. This flagship facility will offer a range of both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles and aims to establish a benchmark experience in luxury car sales in India.

Rohit Suri, who has extensive premium automotive sector experience, has been appointed to head the new organisation and is leading plans to develop a dealer network through 2009 and 2010.

Ravi Kant, Managing Director of Tata Motors, commented: "This is a natural move for both businesses and will allow Jaguar and Land Rover to establish a strong and deserved presence in India. We are very pleased to develop our relationship with Jaguar Land Rover in this way and to provide the opportunity for Indian customers to access their premium products for the first time."

Further details, including specifications, are available on the new Jaguar India website (Jaguar India - Jaguar Cars - Home) and Land Rover India website (Land Rover - India :: Home) which have gone live simultaneously.

Or for that matter next to a yellow board Indica

On a serious note, this would not be the case since Tata is taking services of one Mr. Suri for building the dealer network during 2009-2010 - as mentioned in the article.

Both Jag and LR are extremely powerful brands (at least they used to be till JLR went kaput in UK not a long time ago) and I hope J/LR prospective customers in India ignore the last few years of JLR's history.

Donít worry, they both share similar build quality & reliability issues.

Unfortunately Landrover will never get into the off-road market in India because it will be hard to compete MM540s & Gurkas costing 10 times less. Besides people there donít spend a whole heap of money on off-road or recreation vehicles anyway. So unlike Landroverís original ethos theyíll be just another pointless luxury brand.

JLR has a couple of big disadvantages against its German rivals
  1. Its fully imported and that will put a hefty price tag on it as compared to the locally assembled E classes, 5 Series & A6s
  2. Unlike any of the above rivals Jaguar does not do a 4-cyl. approx. 2.0 engine option for the XF. The only engine options are either a V6 or a V8.
But the existing Jag lineup is excellent. Both The XF and the XK are easily the best cras in their respective classes. They also have a new engine range, a 3.0 V6 diesel , a 5.0 V8 and its supercharged version (503 bhp) for the R versions.
To join this group will be the all new XJ. From spy shots one can see that this car is not proportioned to the likes of its traditional rivals i.e. S class, 7 series, but more in the mould of the Quattroporte. They have also started work on the upcoming roadster.
Exciting times for Jaguar.

Why would Jaguar need to reach an agreement with Tata - I thought Tata owns JLR - or did that deal not come through

Tata does own a majority stake in JLR, but both companies are separate entities. More often than not, this "agreement" is a formal vote from all the directors on the board.

This agreement has to be reasonably profitable for both companies. So the directors representing each company have to be in unison.
