I am not able to decide though - should I wait and check the i20 CRDi or buy the Getz CRDi.

Kailash
the motor in a GETZ CRDi and VERNA CRDi is 1.5 (4 cylinder) and not 1.4.
In the i20 hyundai might offer the 1.4 motor that is offered in UK on i20. this 1.4 motor churns out 88bhp at 4000rpm and 174nm at 2350 rpm.
compared to this the GETZ CRDi motor churns out 110bhp at 4000rpm and 234nm at 1900rpm.
and considering hyundai's pricing policy the diesel motor will be at least 1 lakh dearer that the petrol mill.

Hyundai is tight-lipped about this as of now. But I think 3 people here from various cities(Mumbai, banglore & Pune) have confirmed the news. *When* exactly it gets launched is a question - but since GP is already here, I think i20 will be launched shortly. I am going to postpone my decision till July end at least.

One Hyundai service technician in my city told me that the production of 1.4 CRDi will be in India and they are expected at the end of the year. My guess is, because of the launch of GP, Hyundai is under pressure to release a diesel i20 as soon as possible. So the 1.5 VGT is likely to be plonked into it for an early launch in a top end variant. By the time the 1.4 mill is ready they will introduce them in lower variants.

I really hope Hyundai provides the 110 bhp CRDI motor doing duty in Verna/Getz on i20; atleast in the higher end variant of i20.

88bhp vs 110bhp: Thats a lot of power to loose and torque as well

Grand Punto has sealed the looks department in hatchbacks and there isn't much Hyundai can do to match the Italian hottie. I hope Hyundai realizes that the only probable reason the Getz CRDI sells is its 110bhp CRDI VGT motor making it the only Hot-Hatch in India.

Well, the engine would be 1.4 Diesel, or so I have been given to understand by salesperson in the showroom here.

i20 1.4 L CRDI cars are already being exported to Europe from India for quite some. So I think its only a matter of homologation/ARAI matters before it can be introduced in our roads. I wish they did the same with an Auto gearbox also. Why not even a single "premium hatch" models launched here has an AT option is still a mystery to me. This would have been a great proposition for ladies. Now I see many of them driving around in an i10 AT or NHC CVT.

The day Hyundai learns to price it's diesels sensibly, it will be the clear number two after Maruti in the market. Currently there are material quality issues with Tata vehicles and it'll take them some time to catch-up. Hyundai can just get ahead of the game by pricing the i20 (and i10 diesel later) sensibly. They can then overtake Tata's in the diesel B/B+ car segment and start snapping at the heels of Maruti Suzuki.

Just called up Hyundai Customer Care.

They deny any news of launch (obviously they would). The guy I spoke to hinted about Dec 09.

I need to change my car before Sep 09 (5 year tax here in WB). I just hope i20 CRDi launches before that..

Hope this news is true.
But we`ll have to see whether they price it correctly or not.

I took a test ride of the i20 here in Nagpur, and the sales guy confirmed that the i20 Diesel is being launched by the end of this month! Engine will be the 1.4 CRDI and will be tuned to compete with the FE of the Swift in India. He could not confirm the pricing however.

When I went for a test-drive of the Getz Crdi, I inquired with the salesman at Alcon Hyundai about i20 diesel. He openly confirmed that it was the 1.4 diesel engine, and is coming out in two or three months.
On the Hyundai UK website , they describe two specs for the 1.4 Crdi, one with 75PS output and another with 90 PS output. Engine size, bore and stroke, etc is exactly the same. What gives?

Yesterday before we went to see the Punto, we checked out the i20. Salesguy said that diesel will be out by December-January.

The expereince was quite bad by the way. Salesguy was totally disinterested in dealing with us (maybe when we asked for the i20 he lost interest). He showed the car and rattled off the prices. We asked for a test drive and after a wait of about 1 minute he came back and said that the driver was not avaliable and he doesn't know when he will be back. I told him to call me when he is able to give me a test drive. That of course, will not happen. I asked him to give me the price sheet and he said, "I already told you the prices." We were flummoxed at that approach!

Even if they bring the diesel, I hope they don't do the same stupidity they always do with the diesel variants.

For all you know they will launch the diesel variant but only in the base Magna trim. So no abs+EBD, no airbags, no alloys, no foldable mirrors, no rear wiper/washer, no electric mirrors and no steering controls. All this with piddly tyres as well.

That would just plain suck.

I'm pretty sure they would not repeat the mistakes they made with the Getz CRDi. They should understand that there is now a definite market in India for premium diesel hatches. (BTW I hope they don't go by Honda's definition of a premium hatch)
