I am talking about 2005. And offering a car based on a 40 year old design as a "sporty machine" is certainly something to be laughed at. All show and no go.
Are you sure it uses a Herald Chassis?
Chinkara is supposed to use M800 front suspension. (which will not bolt on to a Herald Chassis). It may use some parts like steering rack etc.

I know it dosent use the Herald rear axle because the wheels look straight. My dad's first car was a Herald and I remember the rear wheels were always tilted.

I've seen the CHinara at the "Mumbai motor show" more like micro show,
Its basically a car that you are gonna buy if you already own a couple of cars & have the extra cash.
Also its really expensive, The finish is no where as to wher it should be when you put out 7 lakhs.]
Look at it this way, there aint much in the way of interiors, therefore whatever there is could use more detail & quality.
I seriously Doubt however that its on a Herald chassis, i had a decent look at it & according to me thats a complete fallacy.

Considering its a plaything car, it needs to have better finish, look cooler ( the Cat 7 does)
definitely have better performance

More than getting worried about a 25 year old engine and 40 year old chassis being mated (its possible...look at the Lotus 7, that chassis is 35 years old and it still is wonderful around a track), my real worry is whether the car is well engineered. Ok, scrouging for Esteem brakes, Jeep tyres, Matiz wiper stalks etc. is ok... but are they well put enough to make it a coherent car?

And at 7 lakhs its highway robbery. 6.5 seconds to 100 is ok, but does that thing stop, go around a corner well and isn't scary to drive? I know of an auto-scribe who had tested the Chinkara who heaped praises in the magazine only to detest it when i had a personal chat with him. Not getting into the whys and hows of the car being praised in the first place... it shows that the car probably isn't as capable as the reviews go.

LOL!! Thats done me for the day.

Seriously - I remember how all the car magazines raved high about the San Storm and its build quality etc. etc. Most even recommended a buy.

I and Dippy were shocked out of our pants when we saw actual sales pieces in person. The build quality was so shoddy that even a Premier Padmini looked like a Lexus next to it.

Read the first post and was shocked to see a price tag of 6.5L. Then went onto read post #5 (again by GTO) and then understood why. Are any of these cars commonly seen on roads??

I have seen a catterham super 7 replica in coimbatore. It is owned by the lakshmi mills group - built by the great Kari. Seen it only a couple of times. Its got a Ford Zetec engine good for 180 BHP I suppose. Considering Kari's standard's that should be one helluva vehicle. Sadly there is no way of getting one done like his.

Buoyed by the response to her first attempt, Bothe is now planning to produce replicas of AC Cobra and the Ford GT-40.
What happened did they/are they working on this.
