Default New Car Warranties: Who offers what?

Tata offers an astounding 4 years/150,000 km warranty on the Safari. That reflects great faith in their own products!

Hyundai has stopped offering 4th year warranty on its diesel vehicles (it's only 3 years/60,000 km now) , but offers 5 years/100,000 km warranty on all petrol cars. Did they lose faith in their own diesels? (4 years/80,000 km was available earlier, but not 5th year warranties).

Toyota offers 3years/100,000 km warranty on all its vehicles.

Mahindra offers 4 years/100,000 km.

Since the quantum of warranty on offer is one of the deciding criteria in buying a new car for most of us, here's a thread that attempts to bring together all information related to new car warranties in one place. I didn't find a similar thread anywhere on the forum, mods please merge if there is.

Also, please relate your experiences regarding how easy/painful it was to get a claim under warranty settled.

I had no clue that Tata offers such a large warranty. Considering that TATA products are dissed so much for their bad service, thats not bad at all!

Doc, excellent initiative, I would just like to suggest that it be broken out the way Sha has mentioned it - Regular Warranty (manufacturer provided) & Extended Warranty (Insurance company provided in most cases).

There are certain differences between the two. For example, TATA - will not blink an eyelid during the regular warranty, they will just replace, PERIOD! Come the extended warranty & there are certain items which they will NOT replace without a sign-off & confirmation from the Insurance company.

OTOH, Ford provides its own Extended warranty.

What did it cost you extra to upgrade from 2yr/40k to 4yr/80k?

Tell us about it - anything that's NOT covered under extended warranty? How difficult is it to claim?

Here you go (I'd posted details earlier on the Extended Warranty thread) -

Tata Motors Customer Care :: Must Know

The big ticket items are all covered under Extended warranty. Its not difficult to claim at all, as long as you're not trying to claim something that is specifically NOT covered. The sign-off & confirmation is for the borderline cases & comes through on e-mail in less than half a day.

If the big ticket items are coverd by extended wty, additional coverage for almost everything is available for the Safari. Ask T.A.S.S reg their Gold-club & related offers.

Please also mention the cost of upgrading to extended warranty if you know it.

If we include extended coverage, which are available for relatively nominal charges, Hyundai leads the pack with its 5 year warranties on its petrol cars. From an entirely different segment, BMW with its 5 year complete BSI coverage (inclusive of consumables such as engine oil + wear & tear parts such as brake pads) sets the benchmark in the luxury market. Mahindra has recently introduced a 4 year 100,000 kms warranty on the Xylo which positively improves the peace-of-the-mind factor. Honda seems to have made the 4 year warranty standard on the Jazz & the Civic (don't know about the Accord & City).

What I don't get is:

1. While Toyota offers a 3 year standard warranty, why are there no extended options? Even if the customer is willing to pay?

2. Mercedes! Man, 2 year warranty on a product that has seemingly high reliability issues. C'mon.

3. Skoda. IIRC correctly, no 4 year warranties, even as extended options.

I am a FIRM believer in long warranty coverage, and feel that every penny of those 7 - 10,000 rupees for extended warranty is well worth it. Related Thread (ARTICLE: Extended Warranties. Yes or No?). I've been milking Tata dry with the claims on my Indigo. 11 parts changed already in 25,000 kms! Extended coverage rocks.

VW & Chevy have done a good job at offering 3 years all inclusive packages.
Is this applicable for the Captiva too? It would be a great deal since the Captiva is now 17.5 ex-show
