I caught this article in today's Delhi Times supplement. I was amazed to read this:

This car will compete in the same segment which is seeing intense action with the likes of the Suzuki Swift and Ritz ranged against the Fiat Grande Puntos and the Tata Indica Vista, the Hyundai i20s and the Honda Jazz plus the range of high profile newcomers expected in the form of the Nissan Micra / March, the Volkswagen Polo and the Ford Figo.

What does this mean? Is it going to be priced and placed in the premium hatchback segment? If priced in this segment, it may emerge as a serious threat to its competitors.

PS: Looks like I ought to wait till March before deciding on my next car.

Default Won't Sell

Toyota is about to make the same errors that Honda made. The Prius is a better car than the Honda Civic Hybrid, no doubt.

But for success in India, it needs the following:

1) Price On road of 17 Lacs - It will compete with the Honda Accord and the Superb and those cars are more luxurous and half a segment larger

2) Solar Roof - India is a hot country. This solar roof will keep the cars interiors cool

3) Careful Tech package - While Navigation is largely redundant in a country like India, other tech. like Bluetooth, Power flow screen, Sound system and auto park are useful Prius features that should make it to the India spec car

4) Adoption as a serious model line vs. a brand building exercise. The Civic hybrid did little for boosting the brand. If anything, it showed us that Honda sold half its lot at double its price, pissing off the customers that paid full price
