Default 48.84 Bucks a km...Total cost of ownership for C220 over three years!

Just a thought:

Cost of owning a C220 over 3 years and 36,000 kms:

13,00,000.00 : Depreciation
1,21,090.00 : Diesel cost (36000 kms at 11 kpl. Diesel @ 37/liter)
55,000.00 : Servicing costs (15,000 for the first & third service and 25,000 for the second service)
37,500.00 : Cost of 5 tyres @ 7,500 per tyre for Goodyear Eagle F1's
2,20,000.00 : Cost of Insurance for three years.

17,58,590.00 : TOTAL

Or Rs.48.84 / km. This does not take into account the opportunity cost of capital. But then, neither does it take into account the depreciation benefits that an owner can avail of! I would be claiming more than this amount in depreciation and tax benefits alone!

Whats your total cost of ownership?

A very interesting article on the Cost of ownership of a car.

http://www.outlookmoney.com/scripts/...articleid=4973

Though the article is from 2004, the analysis is good.

On a sidenote. Is there any tool to calculate the cost of ownership? Something similar to the Tax calculators?

I'm confused is this the same GTO(admin)? or do two people with the same nickname own a C220 each? Well whoever this is ... u r must be really bored :-P (just kidding) however u havent taken into account the so called 'uncalled for expenses' which come along with owning a merc, specially if u come with numerous problems like i have.

Unless you are buying it as a company car and avail the depreciation, it simply not worth the money.

GTO,
agree that you will claim more than this amt in depreciation...but the tax benefits will be only 30-40% of the depreciation...so the tax benefits per se wont outrun the cost of car.
Tax benefits is the most abused term and it is tomtomed by the dealers of expensive cars ...it is like saying can you give me Rs 10....someone will give you Rs 3 in return...it is a great deal..isnt it...and people fall for it..

Of course I do hope and wish that you are blessed enuf in life not to care about these mundane details...just a thought nonetheless

No one is buying a car for the tax benefits. Butttttttttttttttt it is one sweetener when you are buying one for "business" purposes.

So how does one go about calculating the cost of ownership for a current car? Curious since I have ALL the data that can possibly be required except for resale value.

Invest the amount in bonds, you will get the IT exemption along with the interest for your investment & you can get back the money after the term period. Many people would be aware of this.

I love to own a car & Iam worried that I need to spend 10 rs for owning that car. Here the IT exemption plays a convincer role that your actual expense is only 7rs and not 10rs.

I think members should start posting their cost per km in this thread which has slept for about 3 years.

I'll post the 'cost' of running my jeep slightly differently. 1 hour spent fixing the vehicle for every 5 hours of driving!!

I usually refer to True Cost to Own ratings at Edmunds

But this is for US specs cars but I guess a little variation could be assumed.

My previous car which I bought second hand a 99 carb zen worked out to Rs 22.80 per Km, for the 18 months that I owned it and 11k odd km's that I travled, when I sold the same for a small amout, that cost would come down to about Rs 17.00 per Km travelled, when I futher reduce the fule cost, as I would have paid approx the same or more if I would have travelled by a Taxi, that cost comes down to about Rs 12.67 per Km. My total loss as I calculate in the ownership is Rs 12.67 per km, which worked out to a loss of Rs 7985 per month for 18 months that I owned the zen.
