I perturbed at almost everyone suggesting different (& albeit complex but wonderful) method of ranking (using best statistical techniques, which may not be clear to a layman). These just appear numbers jugglery to ensure that a particular car (preferred by member) scores well using their technique.

Why can't we accept the analysis that smartcat has done, & base our car buying decision whatever detailed (statistical/ monetary/ performance, etc.) analysis we do?
It is like downgrading/ undermining the hard-work he has put in.

Do we ever question any gameshow decision or election results... or offer our analysis to declare another candidate winner? I suggest we accept his analysis as it is & use the data to form own decision.

Once again I would like to congratulate smartcat for the detailed analysis that he has done which I can always refer to.

P.S. - I apologise if I have hurt anyone's feeling or undermined his/ her good work.

I have just completed the normalized analysis, and the results are pretty similar to smartcat's results. I will put all the images up in the next few hours.

Here are the first 2:

Performance and Driveability

Thanks for validating what I committed last month and own for a week now. From 1995 onwards - I have driven a Mazda 626, BMW 3.18i in L.A, Subaru hatchback in Singapore, Indica DLX and Accent GLE in Chennai - So there is a penchant to buy only known and proven brands and I dont experiment here.

But I bought the Cedia after I went for a test drive coincidentally as the showroom did not have a Lancer to test drive. It took me 15 minutes to decide and then the next 1 hour to curse HM and then probably thank them for keeping the car under wraps -so the price is lower probably as it is not selling like hot cakes.

The chennai dealer sells 5-6 Cedias every month and I think that could be a little inflated.

So this beautiful mathematical/scientific analysis is just going to be a talking point for me for sometime and is such a pleasant surprise (with me completing 1000 kms in one week of the buy and it did great). Cedia is deservingly in the top 3 positions for both driving parameter and performance.

Thanks echo77 and smartcat.

Copy/paste from MS XL into the forum won't work - your post looks gibberish now.

That's why I take screenshots of XL and upload the image here.

Hmm you too? I was eyeing an used Octavia L&K actually. Does it speed up the growth of white hair too - the old gen Octavia?

I have no issues though - that's why I have uploaded my XL sheet. I know there are many people like me who like to play with numbers.

Hey can you put the original rankings on the side - just for comparison's sake like you have done the previous time?

Glad to hear that there is some correlation between theory (this ranking) and the real world. I wonder what Aveo or Lancer diesel owners have to say about this ranking though!

Smartcat,
Thanks for all the effort you have putin to give us Bhpians so much info. It will make it much more simpler to make our choice. It would be nice if the car companies can also be ranked based on aftersales service, and the way they treat their customers.

Smartcat, thanks a lot for posting this spreadsheet, and as always, great work on the final rankings! Thanks again for all of your amazing efforts and analysis.

I will attempt a simple 0-1 scale based normalization for values that are measurable. Maybe over the weekend. I am already spending too much time on the forum
Unfortunately, I could not get any time to work on this last week and unlikely to get any time next week also. I will try to do some analysis after next week and post here.

By the way, echo77, you have done a great job of doing the percentile rankings. This is very similar to my normalized system within each category. Thanks for your efforts. Now what I will work on is finding the best way to "compound" the effects over multiple categories. I will work on this as and when I get time.

Once again, many kudos to smartcat for a great work! Like many others, I have also given "5 stars" rating to this thread.

Thanks,
-AD

Here's the driveability normalized ranking, and comparison with quantitative rank.

Next, the normalized running costs. Running costs and on-the-road price will have the same rank as quantitative. However, we are interested in the percentile difference of each car.

Here you will notice the HUGE dropoff from diesel to petrol that the quantitative ranking fails to consider.

Thanks, Dr.AD! I hope I have reduced your workload to some extent. But all credit should go to smartcat who took the trouble of entering all those values! All we are doing now is just eye-candy formula

apart from driveability, performance and safety and other prior parameters - if you could also evaluate commercial parameters on a percentile basis i.e. On Road Price (From Autocar India), Resale Value at 2 years and 25000 KM (From Carwale), spareparts cost package (from Autocar India) and Sales (From those published monthly at TBHP).

If you can share the excel versions of the images being posted, then i could probably even help you with the effort

Really looking forward to the SUV analysis. I am on the lookout for a SUV which I can use on rural roads etc.

Considering from Bolero to Scorpio to Fortuner to Outlander. I hope you will cover all these in your analysis.

Keep going.

OTR price is coming up along with the remaining items from smartcat's sheet.

I'm sorry I don't have the patience to search through the sites and enter data. I am very thankful to smartcat for doing that with the current set of values. I'll attach the normalized spreadsheet in the final ranking post (coming shortly) and you could take over from there.

Normalized ranking for OTR price. Like running costs, the ranking will be the same as quantitative, but we are interested in the percentile difference.

Interesting that there are 4 petrols in the 5 most expensive cars, though two of them are 2.0 and 1.8.

The cheapest is a diesel.

The most expensive diesel has the least cc
