Default Re: Sedans Under Rs. 12 Lacs - A Quantitative Ranking

Optra, Elantra and Cedia were originally competing with the likes of Corolla and Octavia - the top end models of all 5 cars were priced between 10 to 12 Lacs (on road, Bangalore). However, the launch of Civic (Rs. 12 Lacs) in 2006 changed everything.

Elantra was the first car to bow out of the competition. Optra sales too crashed - they dropped the 1.8 litre engine and introduced the 1.6 litre petrol engine to compete with the likes of Honda City. After losing that battle too, only then they introduced the diesel.

In the past 5 years, Octavia/Civic/Corolla prices were hiked to Rs. 15 - 16 lacs (on-road, Bangalore) but Optra and Cedia held on to its Rs. 10-12 Lacs price band. Basically, in Optra and Cedia, we have a Civic/Corolla class car at Honda City prices.

ROUND NO. 3 - FEATURES

The only change in this section over last time is that I have ignored features that have no real practicality (eg: foldable key or illuminated ignition key ring). Only features that have real practicality (Eg: lever to push the front passenger seat from the back in Vento) or those that add to the cost of the car (Eg: sunroof) have been included.

Basic Features:

Tallying the number of features adoring each car, we get the ranking of FEATURE rich cars under Rs. 12 Lacs -

Comments:

- Linea T-Jet Plus gets Leather seats, 205 width tyres on 16 inch alloys and rear disc brakes along with the turbocharger on the engine!

- Now you know why Toyota El-Cheapios is priced so cheaply. Their engineers spent a lot of time removing most of the features.

- Vento is fairly well equipped.

- Tata Indigo e-CS has Auto Climb Assist. Any idea what it does?

This is exactly why a quantitative ranking is useful, takes out subjectivity out the equation. Eg, take the features only ranking. Without it, if one has to compare, a general thought will be... Fiat and Tata cars are great in features, Honda is not that generous, Maruti is perhaps VFM. Now we know better, without any "emotion".

The data in 3rd picture (Comfort & Convenience) is incorrect.
Ford Fiesta has Boot Light and Boot Open Button on keys. I drive a 1.4D SXI and it has both. Please correct it & re-rank.

Optra LT Diesel is a surprise. This car is relatively unknown to the general public but it actually makes a lot of sense. Now I see why BHPians keep praising/recommending it. Shame GM did not do much to promote it.

Nice work Smartcat.
Remarkable to see a generation older Optra LT D topping the chart compared to newer rivals.
Cedia still going strong and maintains its position in Top5. Its probably the most underrated of them all. Mitsuís alliance with HM doomed a brilliant car
Another surprise is Vento Dieselís low score in Practicality department but it makes it up in Performance and Features department.

Great Analysis Smartcat. But can we add one more column to comfort & convenience. Which car offers an Automatic Variant. In urban traffic an autobox is becoming a necessity. IMO, the Honda City, Volkswagen Vento, Maruti SX4 & the Hyundai Verna are the cars that offer the option of Automatic Transmission, that too only in the top-end variants.

Good one Smartcat.

Couple of questions.

I own a Aveo 1.4. I have the remote boot opener on my Key, + Boot lamp.

Also, the Accent have the rear sear foldable. Your point system shows it does not have.

Is it a typo? Or you mean the new models don't have??

This was really surprising. Never thought that they had so much.

I believe post 2008 Cedias have engine immobilizer. Also, the 2011 cedia do not have touch screen DVD with navigation and neither does it have leather seats. Please make the relevent changes .

Great Going though Smart Cat.

At that price Magnum is the best buy. If only they add all the goodies which a car like Linea is equipped with and some extra features, I am sure lot of people would buy it even if the price is increased by a lakh. I guess they do not do it to protect Cruze sales.

Will wait till the end of the day to make the changes - more corrections might be needed.

The performance, fuel efficiency and initial purchase price of automatic variants of cars will be different from the manual variants. We need a separate ranking for automatic transmission cars.

Are you sure about this? Mitsubishi website mentions leather seats, GPS navi etc on their brochure. What have they done to the price? Has it been lowered too?

Out of curiosity: Where does the new Hyundai Verna fit in on this list?

The "official" review is here: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/offici...ve-review.html

Prices have not been revealed yet officially though.

What is the point for doing this comparison? Market doesn't go by any set standard or measures. Total points shown for DZire are 25-30 but it leads the market with sales charts from day one almost. Optra & Cedia leads the charts in terms of points, but in reality people don't buy it anymore or hardly any buys.
