VW is rated better than Honda, Fiat and Tata on the after sales support front.

The number of VW cars that went to the service station itself would have been much much lesser & here in our forum itself, I read a bad experience by a member at the service station, where a 30 minutes promised job took 2 hrs. Infact he also mentioned about the poor quality job done (just quoting)

Do we need to consider the booking and buying experiences, people had with the authorized sales and service centers of VW since its the same center whether the vehicle is going to get serviced?

@SmartCat

Really a lot of hard work, like other similar thread on hatchback.

BTW is this analysis is complete ?
If yes, are you uploading .xls format for individual tweaking / weight assignment ?

Cheers

It's done finally!

ROUND NO. 12 - LOOKS

This one is a toughie. It is quite impossible to come up with a ranking based on looks which is acceptable to everybody. But this attempt to rank sedans based on its looks is based on these guidelines -

- Clean contemporary design with flowing lines. Boxy ones get low rankings.
- Quirky designs (like a boot attached as an afterthought) go down the rankings.
- Design should be universally pleasing. If a particular car's design splits opinion, it gets lower points.
- Just plain or boring designs too rank lower.

These are my rankings (mostly based on Team-BHP reviews) -

Sedans Under Rs. 12 Lacs - A Quantitative Ranking-looks.jpg

ROUND NO. 13 - BUILD QUALITY

The rankings are based on Team-BHP and Autocar India reviews. Guidelines for getting higher rankings for build quality -

- No irritating rattles
- Consistent panel gaps. Cars with large panel gaps get lower ratings.
- Good fit & finish/ part quality Eg: Rubber beadings on the door shouldn't be falling off after a few thousand kms.
- Thick sheet metal & heavy doors.
- Good paint quality

ROUND NO. 14 - INTERIORS

The rankings are again based on Team-BHP and Autocar India reviews. Guidelines for getting higher rankings for interiors -

- Soft touch plastics on dashboard and doors.
- Use of colours, chrome & wood without looking tacky.
- High quality rubber & plastic parts with good fit & finish. No parts should be falling off after a few years.
- Airy cabin with a large glass area.

Sedans Under Rs. 12 Lacs - A Quantitative Ranking-interiors.jpg

ROUND NO. 15 - COMFORT

We compare driver ergonomics, front seat & rear seat comfort in this round. Higher priority is given to driver comfort - that is, a car with good driver ergonomics and poor rear seat comfort (Eg: Mitsubishi Cedia) will get higher rankings than a car with poor driver ergonomics and good rear seat comfort (Eg: Tata Indigo). Other guidelines for ranking the cars based on comfort -

- Ease of entry & exit for senior citizens.
- Back/Thigh support from the seats
- Tyre noise/ road noise/ insulation.

ROUND NO. 16 - REFINEMENT

We compare the refinement of both the engine and the gearbox in this round, along with other engine characteristics like turbolag, smoothness at idle, low and high rpms etc.. General thumb rule - Petrols are "more refined" than the diesels. Other than the price, there are 2 other reasons why many customers avoid diesels -

- Lower refinement (that Jirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr diesel sound)
- Turbolag, non-linear power delivery

Cars with the following characteristics will rank higher -

- Petrols first, then the diesels
- Rev happy engine, smooth as butter at higher rpms too.
- Linear power delivery
- Good NVH characteristics
- Smooth, slick and short gearshift

ROUND NO. 17 - RESALE VALUE

Resale value of a car mostly depends on its brand power (but not all the time). And almost all the time, diesels have a higher resale value than their petrol counterparts. And hence this aspect makes up for the higher initial price of the diesels.

Note that we do not have the resale values of new cars like Linea, Manza and Vento. For those cars, I have assigned "average" points (12 for petrols, 15 for diesels). However, my hunch is that Vento diesel will have the highest resale value among the new cars while Linea petrol will have the lowest.

Presenting, the final rankings table (based on 17 different parameters) -

Sedans Under Rs. 12 Lacs - A Quantitative Ranking-total.jpg

(Click on the above image to get a larger clearer one)

Comments:

- Use the above table to check the relative strength and weaknesses of each car for those 17 different parameters. Ignore the scoring for the parameters which you don't find important.

- Do not focus on the total points column only - they are subject to change anyway once we get an idea about maintenance costs & resale value of the newer cars (Manza, Linea, Vento).

So the Linea T-Jet rules the roost. Wasn't a surprise following the journey(thread) for the last few days.

Great job, smartcat!

Just a brilliant compilation smartcat. I have followed this thread quite keenly and the effort is indeed commendable. And so are the results. They surely give a decent picture of the comparison of the varied choice in the market. Again kudos to you for the efforts.

Would you upload the final excel also?

Surprised that ANHC and existing verna scores better than VW on build over VW.

Blame it here...

Panel gaps are consistent throughout, the paint job exudes quality and the build overall feels solid.

I have one comment on the interiors rating of Vento. I TD'd the car along with some friends and we all felt that the plastic parts could have better quality. The other 2 guys have the new city and they both said without blinking an eye that vento is not to that standard. There were other small things like when you move the front seat it makes too much noise etc etc

Does SX4 ZDi have a very good resale when compared to Etios? I would suggest that it also be bracketed along with others for which we do not have data.

So Chevy Oprta Magnum 2.0 is 2nd in the list. Great news. Now I have to figure out whether to buy the Magnum right away or wait till New Fiesta is launched and then decide.

Awesome work, SmartCat.

So the best car in this comparo has the lowest rating on service quality.

Why would one buy it?

For the record, I drive one.

SX4 petrol has been around for quite some time now and its resale value is apparently pretty good. Logically, SX4 diesel's resale price would be better.

Yes, I know Etios will hold its price well in the used car market. But let's wait for a couple of years to get that confirmed. If somebody is considering buying an Etios, they should mentally "add points" to the Etios on the resale value front.

Great work SmartCat, kudos to all your efforts & persistance.
I understand its a tight rope, not everyone will agree with the ratings in different parameters but overall have some rating dashboard reference at a glance.
