Thumbs up Re: Ikon TDCI discontinued ?

Ikon has certianly made its mark in India with its sporty stance and styling.

Its 12 yrs and sunsetting Ikon will make it classic and graceful.

For many owning Ikon , enjoy and keep it well, not many cars in this segement boast of being sporty and excellent to handle... Ikon will be Iconic!

The most well-known Ford vehicle on Indian roads, the Ikon, is being driven into history.
Ford India confirmed on Tuesday that it has stopped production of this 9-year old car model to make way for newer products.

The company has already announced plans to bring in eight new products, based on its global platforms, by 2015 and is already preparing to launch a brand new car later this year.
Confirming the ceasing of production of the Ikon, Ford India president and managing director Michael Boneham told DNA, “We will be discontinuing the Ikon. We need to reduce the number of products in our production facility to allow for new products to be launched. The first of our eight new products will be unveiled later this year.”
As of February 1, Ford has discontinued the sale of Ford Ikon from the non-Bharat Stage IV markets.
Last year, it had stopped selling Ikon in BS IV markets also. The company has sold 1,34,000 Ikons till now and till last month, the car was available in 1.3 petrol and 1.4 diesel versions for Rs5 and Rs5.6 lakh (ex-showroom prices).

Though Boneham did not provide any details of the new car coming from Ford this year, the industry is abuzz with reports of Ford considering to bring down the price of the existing Fiesta, closer to the price of the outgoing Ikon.
Meanwhile, it will launch the new car, expected to be a Fiesta saloon, by mid-year. The new saloon could be priced at a significant premium to the marked down Fiesta, thereby retaining Ford’s presence in both segments.

To a question on capacity constraints, Boneham said that the company’s production facility at Chennai was working at full capacity, on a 2-shift basis, six days a week and it was imperative to plan products in accordance with the company’s stated objective of bringing 8 new products by 2015.
Ford has witnessed runaway success with the Figo hatchback, which sold 8,600 units last month and over 68,000 units since its launch in March 2010. The company’s production capacity is 2 lakh units.

Guys, do you think some dealers will still have a couple of old stock Ikons with them, and that I can get one off them at a huge discount? I hope so, because the Ford website still has an Ikon page. Frankly speaking, discontinuing the Ikon TDCi is illogical IMO, because it will eat into the Indigo's share of buyers if production resumes.

How many units can you sell in BS3 markets? And going by recent sales figures of the ikon, there isn't any business case. And being a 12 year old product, its time that curtains come down to what basically is a mid 90s fiesta with a boot. The existing fiesta will take its place and is a much better all round car in all aspects.

BS3 market buys mostly Tata, Maruti and Mahindra. Ford is very much a Metro brand.

Daydreamin here but I think they should try to make a hatch out of the Ikon and put a 1.2 Rocam in it to match up against Santros

Ford India started with the M&M support in India and introduced the Ford Escort, a mid sizer.I am not sure but had read that it was M&M 's idea (fuel economy) to fit this car with a 1.3 L petrol and a 1.8 L diesel. The diesel was OK but the petrol was underpowered. Ford's reputation had taken a beating and the costly spares made things tougher.Finding the sailing in rough seas tough, M&M (by now an expert in shrewdly exiting JV's) soon exited the joint venture (JV) and the Ford, Marimalai Nagar plant became operational with a higher capacity. The M&M Nashik plant assembly had stopped. Then came the Ikon with a peppier petrol and also its diesel option. The spares were still very costly. Soon they realised that they would be shown the door (so what if they had JOSH? ) and thats when the spares were subject to a price correction. The Ikon sales had now picked up.The Fiesta came along, with the Ikon staying as a cheaper option and these moves resurrected Ford. The Figo and a new Fiesta will see the company doing well in 2011 and even later. The Ikon can take credit hence of having been the first Ford to improve the company's fortune in India.

Question Re: Ikon TDCI discontinued ? EDIT: Confirmed: Ford stops Ikon production

Does the stopping of production means a total stop to support the Ikons sold till date. What about the maintenance spares and support by dealers. Have the dealers also stopped maintaining the Ikon.

Now when Ford India is on a upswing with the Figo's, should it bring on revamped Ikon. I am sure there are many fan followers of this Iconic car. Or is the new Fiesta hatch be positioned in the Ikon segment?

They should provide spares for atleast 7-8 years after the production of the car has been stopped (There is a rule for the same, read it somewhere on teambhp).

Well, all good things will eventually come to an end, and that holds true for the wonderful Ikon as well. Infact, it is a remarkable feat that the car survived for 12 years, with just a few minor facelifts (rather downgrades).

Ikon production is stopped, but spares will continue to be manufactured for atleast a decade, since the car was heavily localized and India spec model, sourcing parts should not be a problem. The current fiesta will be renamed as fiesta classic and will replace the ikon and will be repositioned with some variants and equipment being pruned or reshuffled, whereas the new fiesta will replace the current fiesta and take on the city, vento and the verna.

Though I would love to see Fiesta replacing Ikon, I'm not sure how will they bring down its price to match up with Ikons current price.

Current pricing:
Ikon 1.3 starting @ Rs. 4.97 L
Ikon 1.4 starting @ Rs. 5.59 L

Fiesta 1.6 starting @ Rs. 6.46 L
Fiesta 1.4 starting @ Rs. 7.37 L

Toyota sedan starting @ 4.99 L surely made other players in same segment think twice before they finalize on pricing!

I feel all new Fiesta will start at Rs. 6.99, which is say ~ 50K more than the current Fiesta.

That old school IDI engine was known for reliability and excellent fuel efficiency.

Couldn't agree more. Great fuel efficiency and reliable. But the engine lacks the punch that is expected of a 1.8l spec.

Just read on Vicky.in that Ford has discontinued Ikon from 1st Feb 2011. It is quite sad as I had a long association with he"josh machine" in my previous company.

Looking forward to what Ford does with the classic fiesta. How much can it strip it down?

Considering that Ford sells the Ltd. Edition 1.6 for Rs 5.7 lakh, and the TDCi for 6.5 (I think) once in I while, I think the pricing for the 'classic' Fiesta 1.6 will start at, say, 5.5 lakh in the EXi trim, and 6.3 lakh for the TDCi.

Ford actually stopped Ikon production in Dec 2010. They are acknowledging it only now because they needed dealers to sell off their stocks. Expect the New Fiesta sedan to be launched in the next 2 to 3 months time.
