I have a 2000 model Zen LX i.e., w/o PS, and I agree fully that the steering response is just awesome. its way better than many of the 8-10L C segment sedans in the country today. I nowhere see the mention of the Baleno in here. I have that one too.. Its just the perfect car anyone would like to own, but for the ugly shape. It has an awesome steering as well. add to it power, pickup, FE... a mind blowing package..

Totally agree that the steering 'feel' and response is a very big part of the driving experience. I see a lot of people voting for Ford Fiesta. I bet they have reason to do so. But guess what? I took a TD of the Fiesta 1.6S just yesterday and I voted it down just because of the heavy feel of the steering. Maybe, I am spoilt because my Palio, which I have driven for 8 years, steers like a dream. No car steers like a Palio. The worst Ive driven so far have been the Alto.

The heavy-ish steering feel of the Fiesta is what makes it likeable. Palio too scores well though.

Among the cars i have driven:
Best: Skoda vRS (closest thing to a BMW)
Good: Chevy Cruze, OHC, Fiesta
Worst/Bad: i10 (santro is slightly better), WagonR, Alto, Omni etc.

There's a basic pattern:

Best : Cars with Hydraulic PS
i.e. Fiats, Fords, Mitsubishi.. (not so sure about VRS, but I did like the Fabia)

Worst: EPS
(Hyundais & Marutis)

Major exception being the Swift.

I'll disagree. A-star is no doubt very good. SX4 and Baleno are again quite good (not in fiesta league though) . Esteem was okay too. Its a huge overstatement saying that all marutis are 'worst'.

It isn't that having an EPS surely means having a dead steering.

Most of Mitsubishi cars / SUVs give great steering feel. I have driven Cedia & Outlander and both are extremely good in that aspect.

I'll have to disagree with this comment. I've driven most of the Marutis and Hyundais among others. I have not tried the newer EPS Hyundais, but among the older generation cars, I rate the worst steering feel and feedback for the Wagon R. No feedback or feel at all. Compared to that, the Getz and even the Santro were way ahead. Of the Marutis, I agree that the Swift steering really stands out.

I guess its my time to apologise.
I take back my words.
I guess I wanted to highlight the WagonR, Estillo, Omnis. Inadvertantly, I included much better rides in my worst list.

P.S: My second ride is a Zen and I absolutely love it

However, all said,(and no offence meant to anyone), the worst steering I have felt is that of the i20. It felt like an arcade game. I would not want to do it on the street for sure. All throughout my TD, it kept me guessing.

Best : Fiat Punto
Very Good : Mitsubishi Cedia (I use this everyday. )
Worst : Hyundai i20

Mercedes W124: Outstanding (Just the right weight, feel and feedback)

I found the steering on the Honda Accord 3.0V6 surprisingly uninspiring

I guess EPS robs you of that feel

The Ford Ikon 1.6 also has superb steering
