I think you should be thanking TCS on slippery surfaces, I had both ABS only car and ABS+TCS car, the latter had much better in ice and snow.

The last time I drove on snow was in november after a snowfall. I had the new Jetta then and every few times the ASR light would flicker on the instrument panel helping me retain control. Once I even felt the car skid a bit when I started off from a traffic light but the ASR light came up and the car straigtened up immediately. Problem is the car I have now doesn't have ASR, so I am gonna be in trouble!
