Default GM's new engine plant at Talegaon, MH

High Points:

- Will start with manufacturing engines for the Chevrolet Beat. Yup, Beat diesel should be launching soon too.

- This is GMs first powertrain plant in the world that enables both petrol and diesel engines to be manufactured simultaneously.

- It has an initial annual production capacity of 160,000 engines, and is designed to accommodate future expansion.

- From MOU to inauguration stage = 2 years. MOU was signed with the MH government in August 2008.

- The engine plant complements GM's vehicle manufacturing facilities in Talegaon, MH and Halol, Gujarat, and the GM Technical Centre in Bangalore, which is carrying out a range of engineering, design and R&D activities.

That is great news for all of us.

Beat is a good looking car which i feel can be modified to give an aggressive look. I hope Chevrolet plonk a Made in India, Magnum engine under its hood

I could see only the Chevy Logo in the pictures. I somehow loved the Opel Brand. Hope General Motors consider re-launching it.

New plant huh!!! Has this got something to do with the post about (General Motors (India) Workers Strike at Halol Plant)

With Figo & Polo eating Beat's market, I'm not sure how this new plant will help to boost the numbers of Beat. I'm quite happy that the country is prospering as such due to new jobs, but with sales, only time can answer.

Well, the Opel horror stories gave GM no option but to put it to rest. The brand had built itself a nasty reputation for trouble & high maintenance.

Good facility, how much of it is automated? Do you have any details about the % of parts from India which will be used in this plant?

Had a chance to visit GM's Engine Plant in Talegaon once again. This time 2 years after its launch.

As mentioned earlier, its a flexi line capable of switching between petrol and diesel engine manufacturing as per the market's demands. It was really no surprise that what we saw was mostly diesel engines being made.

Beats cruise down the line as various parts are fitted along the way

Cars are transported on a 2nd level as well within the factory

Crankshafts for the Beat's 3-cylinder engine. (Machined in the factory)

Part retention at specific times during the production (probably for quality testing)

The cute little engine blocks. Interesting that Chevy is also synonymous for "big block V8s"!

Engines carousel around this section where various external parts are bolted on

These cool lifts help just one person load/unload the engines. The Beat diesel engine weighs 130 kgs, whereas the petrol weighs 110 kgs at this stage.

This lets you see all ways at an intersection within the factory. Safety first.

The factory is very careful about avoiding scratches. Belt and watch covers were also mandatory, even for visitors.

And here is GM's latest product, the Sail U-VA. Full review here (Chevrolet Sail U-VA : Official Review)!

Those pics are droolworthy Rehaan. Thanks for sharing, loved the stacked up engine blocks.

From initial reviews over internet looks like UVA Sail is a no nonsense hatchback. I think it will turn out to be a good number churner for GM.

I saw the video of same plant today morning on Malayalam channel Asianet.
Were you part of some media team invited by GM?

Thanks for sharing some really nice Pics. So is it confirmed now that 1.3 SDE engine is locally manufactured within GM plant or is it imported engine? in your pics it seemed only one type of Engines stacked (probably 1.0 xSDE)? was the 1.3 also being manufactured simultaneously there? Would have liked the pics to put all the speculation at rest.

Yeah, my favourite pic too! Too bad that they are small engines, and too bad Chevy doesn't sell "crate motors" here...

I did not see any 1.3 SDEs on the line. It was mostly the 1.0 SDE, with a few petrols floating around. So unfortunately there is no "picture proof", but here is a slide from the presentation (see the second point):
