Nice figures - since 2003, while the mini and luxury segments have remained stable or gone down, the mid-size segment has doubled, compact segment has tripled, and the executive segment has gone up 20 times !!

Tata:
Tata Motors passenger vehicles business reported a total sale of 16,842 vehicles in the domestic market in April 2007, an increase of 26% over April 2006. The Indica sold 10,870 nos., an increase of 28%. The Indigo family registered sales of 2,632 nos., an increase of 2%. The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 3,340 nos, an increase of 49% over April last year. Safari sales at 1474 nos. grew by 269%.
Tata seems to be gaining an amazing grip on the market. Ok, that probably is Maruti's Fortè, and will remain so for quite sometime more. But Tatas are seemingly carving out a niche for themselves. With their limited range of platforms they are still the biggest gainers for the month (26% YoY). Also, the Safari range seems to have blasted into the motoarena all of a sudden... So it is not a TBHP-only phenomenon. 269% growth sounds fabulous. All of a sudden they are doing pretty big nos. on a car which is not a mass-mover category thing. Welll...

Somebody's gain is somebody else's loss[Maybe toyota innova + tata safari effect or the safari effect alone will have to wait till toyota india figures are out]:

Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), utility vehicle and tractor manufacturer, today posted sales of 12,867 units (including exports) for April, up 14.54% as compared to 11,233 units sold during the same month last year.

Domestic sales of Scorpio dropped to 2,974 units, down by 5.67% from 3,153 units sold in April 2006. Domestic sales of tractors too fell by 1% during April 2007, selling 8,275 units as compared 8,351 units sold in April 2006.

M&M April sales up 14.5%

Has the Safari growth spurt got to do anything with government orders?
I suddenly see many Safaris with the beacon. Or could it be that its just the political types are buying it more?

Hmmm... if its the politicos who are buying the safaris we definitely have a lot of 'em here in TBHP, going by the ownership nos.

On a more serious note, its probably not so. Today I get to see so many more safaris (private ownership) coming for service at the S.S. than may be even a year ago. Even the larger dealers like Autofin, Secunderabad store so many safaris in their yards. All this indicates that they are aware of this new found faith that many seem to be developing of late in this beast.

Default Spark, Suzuki numbers look good, Mahindra Logan shy to divulge numbers!

Spark vrooms, Suzuki SX4 on track, Logan yet to pick up
MEENAKSHI VERMA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, MAY 14, 2007 02:12:18 AM]

NEW DELHI: This has been a sizzling summer for the Motown with three big-ticket launches in April. All three launches, the Mahindra Renault Logan, the Chevrolet Spark and the Suzuki SX4, are segment make-or-break debuts for the respective companies. So, how well have they done so far?

From the first indications on the monthly tally alone, the Chevy Spark has come out on top. Though as a B-seg model its numbers will ultimately be bigger than its rival debutantes. The Spark has been the most successful model for GM in India despite the fact that it has only debuted in the north and the west India so far.

Says General Motors India vice-president (marketing, sales & after sales) Ankush Arora, “Within 15 days of launch, we received orders for about 2,500 vehicles from northern and western parts.” GM plans to add more numbers to its sales once it is launched nationwide by June. “Our middle variant is most in demand,” he added.

Also laps ahead is the Suzuki SX4 with Maruti announcing bookings of about 900 units by the second day of its launch. The car was officially launched in early May. “Within a few days, our bookings have crossed 1,000 units and the number is growing fast.

Our top varinat is the most popular,” says Mayank Pareekh, general manager, marketing, MUL. As for the Logan, Mahindra-Renault officials refused to share booking figures. However, according to sources in auto financing circles, the mid-size car’s bookings have been slower than its rival debutantes in April.

“It’s been a slow starter, but we will have to see how it picks up once the nationwide launch happens,” says a senior official with a big financing firm. When contacted, Mahindra-Renault managing director Rajesh Jejurikar told ET, “We have got phenomenal enquiries, but we can’t disclose the booking figures.”

Sources say only 257 cars have been sent out so far but Mahindra Renault officials say that’s only for demonstration and test-drives. Deliveries of the car will begin from May 14. Sources also say that there’s a new variant being planned to increase interest in the Logan

perfectly put. It will come soon I'm sure. the fact that they had to launch a new version a month into the launch shows the market response.

Their prices are competing with Indigo XL! Infact more than indigo XL.
If you factor in discounts, the VFM part of the Logan goes out of the window.
With Suzuki SX4 coming in the top of the line petrol is also feeling the heat.
After the recent spate of launches, the only company which is getting pricing right is Maruti.
