Fabia: i am surprised they are even selling 600+ fabias a month!
CS: i am surprised they don't do well. with a dirt-cheap sedan like that i expected junta to lap it up. wonder whats wrong. Maybe sedan buyers dont want a cheap sedan afterall - there's no dearth of demand for Dezire

Some thoughts on April sales:

1. The Palio MJD hasn't really made the impact that we hoped.

2. Spark has gained momentum. 2700 Sparks a month is no mean feat.

3. Tata *really* badly needs the new Indica. On the other hand, the CS is giving Tata the numbers.

4. Logan seems to have settled in the 1500 - 1700 cars a month range. It will stay there. This is surely not the expectation that M&M / Renault had of the sedan.

5. The BMW 3 series has not really caught the fancy of the market. The ride and Merc's new C seem to have given it a beating. On the other hand, the 5 series is selling respectably well. In fact, consistently more than chief competitor - The E Class. The BMW 7 has caught up, maybe at the S' expense. Both are pretty much within view of each other. The long wait for the S could have pushed buyers toward the 7 series. Also, BMW could have faced a kit shortage in the recent past.

Overall, BMW has sold only 6 cars lesser than Mercedes. That is a mega achievement considering that Benz had a 10 year head start in our market, many more dealerships and far greater brand recall. Audi failed miserably in this competition. Well done, BMW India!

6. Has the Sumo Grande catapulted Tata's sales in that segment? I see a massive improvement, especially when compared to April 2007.

One question here.
Tata is selling just 7200 cars in the < 4000mm range. Isnt the indigo CS < 4000mm, so the sales in that hatch segment would include both Indica and Indigo CS right?
Or is the indigo CS sale counted in the 4001mm+ range?
Also which segment does safari fit in? 7-9 passengers or < 7 passengers?

And FIAT sold just 400 cars! Looks like the MJD is not working out.

I would believe so, but somehow...the numbers dont seem right.

Both?
The CS is in the <4 m segment, and Indica and Indigo CS had sales of 7430 in 4/08 and 13042 in 3/08. 3/08 numbers are anyway higher for all companies. Some of 4/08 sales have gone into 3/08. Still, 2/08 numbers are usually low for all, and even in that month, Indica+Indigo CS sold 10129. That means (a) lack of success for CS/Indica/or both (b) some number shifting to March (Tata's financial year ends in March).

please check the tata motors statement

"Passenger Vehicles

Tata Motors passenger vehicle business reported a total sale of 14,843 vehicles in the domestic market in April 2008, a decline of 12% compared to 16,842 nos. sold in April 2007. While the Indica retails were over 10,000 nos., wholesale billings were restricted to 7430 nos., a decline of 31.6% over April 2007. The Indigo family registered sales of 3763 nos., an increase of 43% over April 2007. Sumo and Safari sales at 3650 nos, registered an increase of 9.3% over April last year."

It clearly mentions 7430 is the number for indicas only and indigo family ( including cs) is 3763

i was reading the Apr '08 issue of Autocar India today morning where they have reported that Fabia sales have been astounding and it is really flying off the shelves. It seems there is a waiting period too now (dont remember how long). Doesnt really tally with the numbers published, does it?

Read all issues of Autocar from previous 5-6 years and you will find that what they say about Skoda/VW does not match with reality at all. I have read (in our office library).

The spreadsheet indicates the presence of some Ford vehicle in the sub 4m range.

I think the Fusion diesel classifies as a small car.

Default All India(State wise till Apr'08)

MINI B1
Wagon-R,Indica,Santro,i-10 are in a neck to nect position, and look at the Spark, even after lots & lots of offers still not even touching 10K mark, same applies to Estilo.

MINI B2
Swift still rules with almost whoppy 80% market share , and Fabia even after @ higher price still rocks.

LOW MED

CIVIC & Octavia are leaders in there segments.

SUV

C-RV,Endeavour,Captiva tops the list.

MUV

Innova still rocks being costlier than other competetors.

Pulsar - thats a good analysis. Your picture does not include the MUV segment (though you mention about Innova).

Can you include that comparison too?

Did anyone notice that the M800 is almost out of the top 10 best seller list. Thats a position it held for like 2 decades.

Here's to the next era.
