Vasudeva,

Thanks as always. To take your words further, price cuts dont revive a brand that was plagued by FE,spare prices/availability doubts. They needed good ole marketing (Chevrolet Promise, Total Maint Plan etyadi along with price cuts has ensured that there are enough GM vehicles out there to warrant a decent service network, which has its attendant benefits!)

Wow, bad times to be making cars. The industry is in for a bloodbath! Hyundai has taken a massive hit in the B segment. The Santro + i10 sold almost 50% lesser than in May 2008 and about 33% lesser than in June. Compare that to Maruti whose compact sales are down only 7% MOM. Hyundai's misfortune has made Tata the no.2 player again, with a 1.8 point lead in overall market share. The Fabia's slipping drastically too....now at a meagre 600 cars per month.

In the C segment Ford, GM & HM are suffering the most. The NHC continues its growth despite all market dramas, while other value leaders like Maruti, Hyundai & Tata are also doing respectably well. The Logan is now down to 50% of July 2007. I have always insisted that Mahindra goofed up the diesel's pricing bigtime.

The Honda Civic is totally losing favour within the Indian market. Sure, the new Corolla & the recently launched Jetta have lured buyers away. But the Civic is not the most practical sedan and the market seems to have realised this. Where are the VW numbers, Vasudeva? I am eager to see how the Jetta has affected Skoda. The new Accord has relegated the Camry to an all time low of a mere 27 cars. The YOY shows a 80% cut. Evidently, hotels are tightening their belts too.

Surprise surprise, the 3 series overtakes the C Class, even though the latter is a fresh model and is better suited to chauffeur-driven owners. Butttttttttttttttttttt a bigger surprise is the E-Class overtaking the 5 series by more than twice as many sales. The cheaper E220 & E230 have surely played their part here, but BMW did respond with the 520D.

Trying times indeed for automotive manufacturers.

Posting here on advice of Mods:

SIAM / cybersteering all give data on a manufacturer and the segment. A segment can have 2 models from the same manufacturer and we have to draw our own conclusions.

Also SIAM gives data from manufacturer. So a dealer can have the car in his yard and it would be reported as sales by SIAM.

Does anyone else track sales of cars at a deeper level - model leve and variant level (ex: Spark LS, LT and so on). To my mind the only org which has this granular level of info is the RTO for all vehicles not necessarily cars. Do they share this data??? We would have excellent info that way is it not?

Or is there any other private org like a AC Nielsen type of org, which tracks this.
Thanks
Nimz

Thanks Vasudeva this is an exceptional INFO.

Things seem to b hotting up for sure. I noticed that VW and AUDI sales are not incorporated. Can we see car wise sales figure for A & B segment. as most played MSIL/HIL & TML have more than one car in these segments.

Man, if the market dominator loses, can anyone else be expected to gain? The Y-O-Y drop is almost a whopping 10%. Sure, some may be planning their purchases by end-September, but that is certainly not worth 10 points! The only real gain for Maruti has been in the A3 segment. That can be entirely credited to the Dzire which didn't exist in '07.

High interest rates, fuel prices going through the roof and 12+% inflation...car companies are a worried lot at the moment.

Maruti Suzuki Aug Sales Fall; Bajaj Auto, TVS, Mahindra Rise

NEW DELHI (Dow Jones) - Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (532500.BY) posted a decline in sales in August for the first time in five months as higher loan rates and gasoline prices slowed demand in India.

Sales fell 9.2% in the past month to 59,908 vehicles, from 65,968 a year earlier, the Indian unit of Suzuki Motor Corp. (7269.TO) said in a statement Monday. The New Delhi-based company had posted a 2.1% decline in March.

Maruti's local sales declined 10% to 54,113 vehicles as it sold fewer Alto, WagonR, Zen Estilo and Swift small cars. Exports rose a marginal 1% to 5,795 vehicles.
India's commercial banks have raised loan rates and enforced stricter lending norms, leading customers to defer purchases in Asia's third-biggest automobile market. This has reduced the number of cars bought on credit to about 70% from 80% previously, analysts said.

"High levels of interest rates will continue to affect demand and volume growth," Jamshed Dadabhoy, a Mumbai-based analyst at Citigroup said in a recent report. Carmakers are offering discounts to boost sales amid intensifying competition and weak demand, he said.
Maruti sold 37,667 units of the Alto, Zen, WagonR and Swift models in August, 9.7% less than a year year earlier. Sales of the SX4 and Swift Dzire sedans, however, rose 12% to 5,427 vehicles.

Automobile sales of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (500520.BY), India's top sport-utility vehicle maker by sales, rose 5.2% in August to 19,211 vehicles. This included 11,731 SUVs, up 2.1% from a year earlier.

Mahindra, however, posted a 35% decline in sales of the Logan sedan at 1,464 units in August. The car is made under a joint venture with France's Renault.
Mahindra's tractor sales grew 16% to 7,597 units in August.

Bajaj Auto Ltd. (500490.BY), the second-biggest motorcycle maker, said it sold 200,955 two- and three-wheeled vehicles in August, up 2.7% from a year earlier.
Sales of motorcycles such as Discover and Pulsar rose 4.7% on year to 175,274 units. Three-wheeled vehicles sales, however, slid 4.6% to 24,324 units.
Rajiv Bajaj, managing director, said production of a new 125-cubic centimeter Platina electric-start motorcycle will start later this month. The company aims to sell 10,000 units of the new model in the first month.

The new models are expected to lift the Pune-based company's motorcycle sales in the local market by "double-digits" in the second half of this fiscal year.
TVS Motor Co. (532343.BY), the third-ranked motorcycle maker, said total scooter and motorcycle sales rose 11% in August to 114,321 units. It included 52,304 motorcycles, up 13% on year.

Default Hyundai Sales rise

Source: Maruti Aug sales falls by 9.19%; Hyundai sales up

Hyundai sales up
: Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Monday reported a 33.91 per cent jump in domestic passenger car sales during August at 21,610 units as against 16,138 units in the corresponding month of 2007.

The company's cumulative sales (including exports) during August were up 57.46 per cent at 44,710 units compared to 28,394 units in the same month a year ago, Hyundai Motor India said.

Its exports for the month accounted for 23,100 units compared to 12,256 units during the same month previous year, a growth of 88.48 per cent.

HMIL sold 38,477 units of hatchbacks Santro, Getz Prime and i10, 6,193 units of Accent and Verna, 37 units of Sonata Embera and 3 units of its SUV Tucson during August.

"Looking at the current market scenario, we are happy with Hyundai overall sales and this again reinforces our belief that if you have a strong product portfolio, it will see you through even in tough times," HMIL Senior Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena said.

In the coming months, the company expected the economic conditions to improve, so that the industry would stabilise, he added.

6193 units? hmmm... those looks substantially high as Hyundai is doing close to 3K numbers in that class. I wonder if it involves export units! Looks to be pretty high even then!

well GTO i just wanted to know after all this down fall in the new car market, are people really up to buying the seconds?

or is it because of this badly hit monsoon season too apart from the inflation and other issues?

Default Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Sales -Aug

Passenger Vehicles
Total sales of passenger vehicles were 15,573 nos. in the domestic market in August 2008, a decline of 6% over 16,620 vehicles sold in August last year. The Indica sales of 7,756 nos. declined by 31.9% over August 2007 on the back of the announcement of the next generation Indica Vista in the last week of August. The new generation Indica Vista, which went on showroom display in August, has received an extremely encouraging response from the market and the numbers of the Indica range should start looking up from September onwards as the retail activity commences in September. It is expected that demand of the Indica Vista will run ahead of availability in the next few months.

The Indigo family recorded sales of 4,460 nos., a 104% growth over August 2007. The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 3,357 nos., a 11% growth compared to August 2007.

No stats yet for August? Looks like all car makers except Hyundai were in negative...both Yoy and MoM.

I have posted August 2008 sales figures here:

Mom: month on month growth; yoy: year on year

Although 8/08 sales are up 7.8% (mom), they are down 2.4% (yoy). Second straight month of yoy decline.
People are deserting M800 because of high fuel prices.
In compact, Hyundai is the only one doing well. Swift could be down because of production (though Maruti’s production in 8/08 was higher than sales). Tata Indica is not selling, and inspite of exhortations by German (sorry Indian) mags, Fabia is only going down. Fabia still sells more than Fiat and Ford though. Fiat has not been able to sustain its early increase and is going down every month. At this rate, within a month or two, Palio petrol+diesel in say 11/08 will equal Palio Petrol in say 1/08. Gm’s price cuts boosted UVA/Spark in 7/08 but again decline in 8/08. Can we expect another loyalty/celebration scheme in Navratras.
Flops in mid-size: Fiesta, Ikon, Aveo, Logan. City has picked up, also boosted by some discounts.
Both GM Optra and Skoda Octavia are now falling fast. They are now keeping company with Civic which enjoyed a 14 straight month of yoy decline. Perhaps Altis effect. Corolla sold 0 in 8/08. Yet, 1605 were produced in 8/08 (Altis?). Look at the stupendous growth of C-class and 3-series. Elantra’s sold 0 of 2006 production in 8/08 compared with 1 of 2006 prodn. In 7/08. Either the suckers have wised up, or no more 2006 production to sell. Cannot bet on it though.
Accord now stabilised. 5-series creamed e-class in 8/08. Camry picked up fast. Surprisingly, a total of 0 Camry’s were produced in 8/08.
Cab sales for Call centre/BPO are thriving though at a lower rate.

Undoubtedly the most price sensitive segment. That's rural and semi-urban India feeling the inflatory pinch!

MJD or not MJD, the Palio's case is finished. Indian's have a long memory...I suggest they discontinue the Palio and focus, instead, on their more contemporary cars. Surprisingly, GM's Spark has held up well relative to its competition. Hyundai is indeed "redefining the rules". Their Kappa advertising tagline couldn't have had better timing. Well done.

Skoda Fabia slips to its lowest ever @ a dismal 564 cars! But expect auto mags to still comment that the Fabia has an outstanding sales record .

Tata's Indigo is consistent, down 0.6% m-o-m but it's a whopping 100% increase over the last year. Isn't it amazing how the City weathers the storm? Not only are market conditions dismal, but there is an all new City just a couple of weeks away. Man, I am flummoxed at the success of the NHC. Obviously the market thinks it is a fantastic package. The Verna & Accent have performed respectably too.

Civic sliding even more and now straight into Accord territory. The latter, despite bearing a 7+ lakh heavier price tag, is only a 100 units behind the smaller brother. Skoda is down in the pits with the Octavia & Laura. That's a new low of only a combined 520 cars.

The market amazes me. Despite a diesel enigne option and an overall competent product, the Hyundai Sonata sells only 37 cars a month. Compared to 400 Accords!!

C Class creaming 3 series. 5 series creaming E Class, E220 notwithstanding. The least price sensitive segment? Yup, the 1 crore sedan. The S-Class beats the trend with a sales hike to 62 cars!

P.S. Tell you a secret : Near 400 Rhino's flying off showroom floors!

Witness the four or five Camrys in contrast to the sea of Innovas i saw at one of the Toyota dealerships lot here in Chennai. I was told that Camry sales have actually picked up this year ,compared to last year. Does anyone have numbers to back what the salesman told me?.
