One simple stat is when the Per capita annual income of an economy comes to the level of the car cost, the economy is seen to have seen surge in the car buying trend. That is what happened in China when it recently went beyond that Per capita income point.
But mind you like US the cars are cheaper in China, but in India the cars are costly and the Per capita is way lower, but things might change you never know.

The worry is that as we head towards being the No 3 country in terms of car production, and ofcourse also in becoming the most populated country, some how we can also be sure that our road network will be fighting a loosing fight to the cars on the road.

Driving on empty roads will tend to be a thing of the past. Am not sure if this is really good news. Alternate modes of transport and fuels combined with better administration is what we really need.

B'lore has Volvos running every 5min during office hours and yet there's not a place to stand in any of them.

Look at Delhi Metro; it runs just as packed as a Mumbai local train.

Alternate modes are being exhausted too!

^^ I would say,Alternate modes are being implemented too little, too late without an integrated approach to traffic management of the city as a whole. And that's why these modes are overcrowded and seem insufficient. A properly designed public transport with restrictions of usage of cars / other individual vehicles during specific times / places, should encourage public transport. Even parking restrictions in multiple office complexes (Like above a particular level in management only will have access to the company's parking lot) can encourage employees take public transport. We had this back in mid-80's in our 9 storeyed building. Just for want of parking space, we used to take buses. This is only one possibility of encouraging public transport for commuting. Cities will eventually have to do this, sooner or later.

Quick-transit public transport is the only way out. But we're so far behind in building infrastructure, that unless we start in earnest today, we'll never be able to catch up (doubtful even then). I personally tried the Delhi metro on my visit last year, and just to gauge the difference, I did the same routes by road on return trips. 'Staggering' is the word.

What use is millions of cars sold per year, if we don't even have enough roads to put them on?

The Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) was introduced in Pune as a pilot project and trust me, it flopped and made things worse. Primarily because there was just no discipline. Anyone would just get into the dedicated bus lane to get ahead in the traffic jam.

Rules are not something we are good at following.

With the market behaving the way it has been for past year, maybe now is the time to ask Booz what are they predicting now........
