| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | Well since long time we were debating on this and today i have an evidence for the same. Here is some important info from the TSB Based on a Hyundai India TSB dated on 13th September 2010 it has been confirmed that the infamous 'steering rattling noise' do exist in large numbers both in i10 & i20. Model : i10 /i20 Group : Steering System Number: 10-56-I09-PA/PB Date : 13- Sep -2010 Area : INDIA Subject: CAMPAIGN FOR GEAR ASSEMBLY STEERING NOISE CONCERNS. DESCRIPTION This is with reference to the feedback received from dealers regarding, rattle noise from the gear assembly steering on the rough road at any speed. This rattle noise occurs when there is a contact between the rack support yoke and the yoke plug (metal to metal contact) due to vibration on rough roads. This rattle noise can be eliminated by replacing the urethane pad with yoke plug & and yoke spring as shown in figure. .......... PARTS REQUIRED Case A - Kit-1 a. Yoke Plug b. Urethane Pad c. Yoke Spring Model falls under CASE A - i10 & i20 Applicable VIN range for i10 - 417501 ~ 699405 Production periond - 19.08.09 ~ 31.07.10 Applicable VIN range for i20 - 073867 ~ 207656* Production period - 23.07.09 ~ 31.07.10 Case B - Kit-2 a. Urethane Pad b. Yoke Spring Model falls under CASE B - i10 & i20 Applicable VIN range for i10 - 124027 ~ 417500 Production period - 01.07.08 ~ 18.08.09 Applicable VIN range for i20 - 016366 ~ 073866 Production period - 01.12.08 - 22.07.09 Note: For vehicles affected under CASE - A, yoke plug replacement is necessary since oil has been applied in the yoke plug. However in CASE-B, no application of oil, so yoke plug replacement is not required. * Campaign need to be performed in all the affected vehicles without customer complaint. ................ | Senior - BHPian | Thats some bad news for the Hyundians. Can we then expect a recall from Hyundai. ![]() What about the models brought in 2011? Are they then defect free? My Sister recently brought an i10 AT. I need to mail her this info then. Thanks Wildon for bringing this imp piece of information. I guess we will now see more i10 and 120's in the Hynudai workshops |

| But hey! Wasn't this done long ago? I think I read Wildon's post only on how Hyundai wants to put urethane pad between yoke plug and spring? What is new in this? Am I missing something? |

Oh yeah!!!! I was just concentrating on the solution to the issue and was expecting to read a different solution than what posted before!! That number is really ![]() But did adding the urethane pad help the cause? I heard that it did not. If it actually does not then Hyundai should do something!!

| Damn - I just bought a May 2010 mfg i20 !! Unfortunately the VIN falls in that range. Till now it has traveled 2350 kms but no rattles. Do I go ahead and just request them to do replacement under Case A? |

| BHPian | My September 2009 model i20 had the Yokepad and spring replaced during the first free service. However the issue still continued. So the Steering rack itself was replaced at HMP,Chennai. But the issue returned after apprx 1.5k kms. Again the Yokepad, spring was replaced at Beau Hyundai at my hometown. Its been more than 5k kms since this change. The issue hasnt re-occured yet. I seriously hope it stays this way. ![]() |

| BHPian | So much for Hyundai's claims that only certain cars have the issue. It shows that there is a serious design defect in the car, the sheer number of cars affected proves this. They know that at some point in time, cars manufactured in this period will be coming in with this complaint. I don't know how long will they be insisting on this yoke spring, urethane pad drama. It did not work on my car and the rattling still persists. Also, quoting from another thread : http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...n-driving.html Quote:

| If my calculations are to believed, the steering rattle issue is present in 766,666 vehicles!! Will there be a mass recall for solving the rattle issues? |

Mass recall? In India? They will comfortably spare themselves the horror!! This TSB too would have never seen the light if it were not for Wildon. Remember, this is not official. ![]()

| I bought my i20 diesel in Sep 2009. I have not had any issues with the steering till now. Is it possible that the dealer corrected it without informing me or maybe I just got lucky and have not had the problem(yet!)? I am going for my 4th service (first paid service) next week. I will ask them about this issue. |

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | ^^ If your Tax invoice receipt showing the part no: 08Z0X57776 then your car is plagued with this issue and got a field fix for the same. If your dealer is not given any explanation for the same you can safely assume that they are covering it up the issue. |

| BHPian | Thanks a lot, Wildon - I have spoken to two of my colleagues about this (1 i10 and 1 i20). The guy with i20 took this issue with his service center few months back, and they fixed it for him - he do not know what did they change, but now the issue is gone. The i10 owner have this issue, and he said he will take this up with HASS. I will spread the awareness within my circle, it is a shame that Hyundai is not admitting it in public, like Honda did. Thanks again for all your efforts. |
