Default Tata T1 Prima truck racing championship scheduled on March 19, 2017

Tata Motors has announced that the fourth season of the T1 Prima truck racing championship will be held on March 19, 2017. Like its earlier three iterations, the Buddh International Circuit will continue to be the venue of the racing series for the 2017 season as well.

Tata first brought the concept of truck racing to India with the Season 1 of the T1 Prima racing series in 2014. Every subsequent year since then saw a new season of the one-make truck racing championship. Indian drivers participated in the race for the first time in Season 3 last year. These drivers were selected from the T1 Racer Program (TRP), which is Tata Motors' motorsports driver training and selection program.

The top 10 drivers from TRP 1.0 last year got a chance to participate in the Season 3 of T1 Prima racing series. Similarly, this year, top 10 shortlisted drivers of the second edition of T1 Racer Program (TRP 2.0) will be participating in the Super Class category, while top 10 drivers from the first edition (TRP 1.0) will race in the Champion Class Category.

For the 2017 season, there are a total of three categories for the racing championship:
• Super Class - Comprising of 10 new Indian drivers from TRP 2.0
• Champion Class - Comprising of top 10 Indian drivers from TRP 1.0
• Pro Class - Comprising of 12 international drivers

The T1 Prima Truck Racing series is certified by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) and FMSCI (Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India). It is organized by Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) and is in-line with the safety and performance guidelines set up by the British Truck Racing Association (BTRA).

Are these mammoths selling at all ? Hardly see them on my highway runs. Its easy to mistake them for a Volvo Semi, but even those are a rare sight these days.

Interesting news associated with the event:

First, about a 1000 bhp truck developed by Tatas.

"Tata Motors has developed its most powerful truck ever which will be on display at the Buddh International Circuit near Delhi this week.

“The 1000 bhp Prima will be a showpiece during the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship. If all goes well, it will be the vehicle which we can sell abroad. I will leave it at that,” said Ravi Pisharody, Executive Director, Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors, in a recent interview.

The fourth edition of T1 will see 400 bhp Primas belt the race track on Sunday in what is expected to be a high voltage event. Two prototypes of the 1000 bhp Prima will be on display at the event to showcase the prowess of the Tata Motors engineering team in Jamshedpur which worked for over a year on making this a reality."

Second, about a separate series for Indian drivers. Couldn't find out if they are promoting and training regular truck drivers or professional racers. Hope it is regular truck drivers.
“Last year we were not sure about the Indian racers, so we brought them into two groups of six each. Now we are going to give them exclusively a full race. From our point of view, it is about creating self-esteem for the driver community that we cannot measure in number of trucks sold,” added Pisharody.

Rest Assured that the Indian Drivers who drove the Prima Trucks in the Tata T1 Prima Truck Racing Series Season 1 - 4 (latest one on discussion here) are all regular truck drivers whom we find on our roads on a day to day basis.

Their selection process goes something like this.

Tata Motors Identifies their "largest fleet owners" and ropes in their support to nominate their "best drivers" for the T1 Race Training Programme. From that list a reputable agency did a profile evaluation (including a questionnaire based evaluation) and short listed about 200+ Drivers.

The 200+ group were put through the basics of Race Driving and Evaluation at the Tracks in Chennai (since late December 2016) and from that a group of 20 potentials were selected

The 20 were given a crash course on Race Driving and the Sporting Rules and Regulations etc. at MMRT and then taken to Buddh International for a final evaluation and time trials

From the Trials the final 10 was short listed.

Nagarjuna, who raced in the Champion and won, was last years Runner Up - Last years winner Jagat Singh finished 7th overall. It may be noted that the this years drivers - Super Class - there are some good ones and were doing some times equal or better than the Champions

To their Credit the Indian Drivers, who are regular Truck Drivers in their day to day profession with their slightly "de-tuned" trucks were not too much off the pace of the British and European Drives (who are Truck Racers 24x7x365) with the Trucks in "better state of race-tune".
