Some pics of a 1986 rally Gypsy. IIRC,my employer (Sai Sevice) had sponsored two all women teams in that rally.

Dear all - a couple of days back, a colleague TeamBHPian sent me some priceless photographs of the Fiat 1100D cars used by the Deputy Clerks of the Course in the 1982 Himalayan Rally (thanks Srinivas, you have made me very happy! ). The details are given in post number 1 on page number 1. The tall gentleman is Jagdish (MRJ9881) and the gentleman in the blue shirt is Homi (MMB141). The gentleman on the extreme right in the second photograph is Yezdi. I stand corrected on the registration number of Jagdish's car, it was MRJ9881 and not MRJ9863. Enjoy the photographs!

I must mention here that all the 5 fiats were fully rally prepared to group A rally specifications and were very fast, considering that there were no expressways in those days!

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Fiats were the fast cars. Jeeps were hardy. Jongas were choice for forces teams. Ambassadors were beast to keep running. But that is what was available and that is what was used. Sipani's fiberglass car was used in 1984 for the first time. Thanks for those pics.

Sir,
You have brought alive the memories from the golden era of rallying in India. Without doubt the Himalayan Rally was the one which truly ushered in the motor sports era in India. Although I was quite young at that time but still have the faint memories of the photographs from the rally which appeared in the national dailies. Sir it is a sheer privilege to hear about the stories of the legendary rally as a first person account from someone like you, who has experienced it and lived it. After reading through your experience one gets to know that how much hard work and sweat goes into successfully organizing an event of such a proportion and considering that it was managed in a pre IT revolution era, it is definitely an achievement of sorts. Thanks a lot for your valuable insights.

Came across some media coverage articles about Himalayan Rally (Courtesy: India Today)

Some lovely footage there. Good to see Sekhar Mehta & and team mate Lofty Drews (Kenya) doing podium on his No 1 Opel Ascona. No 4 Toyota Celica of the German Team (West Germany's then) women's race champions Marianne Hoepfner and Oda Andersen finishing Second.

Vicky's passion for Rallying and Motorsport is/was such that, he was always ready to play the odd ball .

Here is an example of that - 1984 Himalayan PD - Ford Escort Mk 11. He finished 4th Overall and best in 1600 class that year. Co-Driver Shreekant Jha.
