Default Desert Storm 09

A storm is brewing and taking shape in the wilderness of Great Indian Thar desert. Like some unknown dark monster it is awakening and getting ready to rear its head in February'09.

The team has been hard at work to come up with increased level of challenge and difficulty. The "Endurance premium" is going to be needed in ample quantities.

So what is going to be in store???
1. The event will be a seven day long (up from five last year)
2. Super rally format will be followed allowing any one to take a restart for the next day for competing only for section or leg wins.
3. More night sections including for bikes.
4. Long sections touching 80kms+ (last year we broke longer section in to two smaller ones)
5. Four categories
Bikes - any make shape and size running on timed SS format
Xtreme - any vehicle running on timed SS format.
Ndure - four wheel drive vehicles in a single category running TSD format and traversing some Xtreme sections.
Xplore - two wheel drive vehicles in a single category running TSD format

6. A "lugage" van moving from night halt to night halt (only for bikers to put in their spares and things)
7. We plan to spend one night under the stars - night buovac - like Dakar does.
8. Delhi start with a SSS after ceremonial ramp.
AND....
.....
.....
.....
.....
The Storm will hopefully subside on shore of Arabian Sea with a beach party!!!

Watch out for entries opening announcement coming soon. Maximum entries in each category:
Bikes - 20
Xtreme - 30
Ndure + Xplore 50

Whoa! Thats some plan. Best of luck Sudev with your plans.

But, isn't it a little early to be scouting for entries. I mean in the past you've had entries open up around the end of the year for a Feb event.

Bigger event = longer ground work
This year we will run super rally regs so that any one dropping out in a day can still join back (after getting their vehicle in shape) for the next day. This mean higher number of rooms all through the event, So entries have to open 5/6 months in advance. As it is getting hotel rooms at all night halts is logistic nightmare today.

Do we see you two as entrant/volunteer?

We will drive through but as a transport. Although for TSD - Xplore & Ndure - guys it is competition all the way till end.

Well I wish! But the expected arrival of a certain new member in the family would mean she needs to stay off the rugged terrain for a little while. And she is going to kill me if I went out scouting for a co-driver.

Volunteering: It all depends on the situation at that time. I am hoping and praying all goes well and I can assist your team in any way possible in this mega adventure.

Regarding the event, I agree it is going to be a huge logistical nightmare to organize an event with the super rally format. Its great news for novices. At least now their event doesn't end with one mistake; they have a chance of continuing their quest for further glory.

Sudev,

Desert Storm is getting interesting with this new plan.

Count me in for Feb. 09!

Now I need to make some plans for a desert rally vehicle. Please post up tech guidelines for the extreme section. Thanks.

Regards,

The tech guideline would be on the site as soon as entries open. In the meanwhile you can start a thread here and ask all the guru's for advise.

OK. Let me ask. I have the following questions. I am asking as a person who has NEVER participated in any of such events (desert storms/raid etc..)
  • Where do I start? On reading the various sites, it looks a very very daunting task considering the amount of paper work required. (MAI License, Competition License, Special Insurance for vehicle & self, Entry Forms etc etc..) We have problems getting the regular DL and here we need even more. This looks daunting. I am not saying that it would be, but it does give me that perception
Is there an easy step by step process that a person can follow.
  • What are the minimum things that I need to consider for my vehicle. Let me ask using my S10 and Gypsy. My S10 is pretty much stock. What should I focus on for the DS-09? Suspension, engine, Brakes etc? Which is most likely to get more stressed based on your experience? My Gypsy is a SOFT TOP. Are "Open Top" vehicles allowed?
More questions to follow soon..
