thanks V1p3r. I sort of understand it now. But still it sounds amusing to me as drag racing is an alien world for me (as of now).

At the same time, if one is 'missing gears' and someone is not, then would we say that the other one has better control over his vehicle in actual competition environment?

Not really. It happens to the best of them. Which is why pro cars and top fuel dragsters have lock-up clutches and air-shifters. You don't need to manually change gears then.

May sound like a stupid question, but would then those 'paddle shift' gears behind the steering wheel be helpful to avoid missing gears?

Erm, no, this was BLR. I did 16.6 in the practice run where Wolf beat me by less than half a car length. Then I did 16.9 in the final run. Memo did 16.9 in the same race just after my run. Then his car got totalled so he drove Mcl's car in Mumbai.
Maybe if you upgrade the tyres it might help, coz the 9.9 and 16.9 for the VTEC is with 175mm S322 tyres. So if we can reduce the 0-100 time, it will definately improve the 1/4mile figures.

Only way to find out for sure is to fit a testing gear on a stock vtec/baleno and run them.

Akshay,

The driver needs to be really bad to go from 1st to 3rd. Can understand if he accidentally goes from 3rd to 5th or 2nd to 4th.

Viper
Be it 1st to 3rd or 2nd to 4th or 3rd to 5th; all sound dumb to me. Driver must be in a panic and lost his brains to change the gears.

It could be 1st to 4th or 2nd to 5th or 3rd to 2nd or 4th to 3rd (gear arrangement assumed to be in the pattern of 2002 indica dls) or may be 3rd to 6th(if the car has 6 gears)

OR

It could be when gear lever is not having a smooth motion from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. This normally happens(in our car) when there is a play. But shifting from 3rd to 4th is a breeze. I think this explanation appears to be more appropriate though I have never participated in a drag race in a car.

A hypothetical gear shift used as an example is being blown out of proportion. We don't know what the actual missed shift was.

The Supra clearly had a hiccup just after the start. It almost felt like he was slowing down to let the other guy catch up and then it got together and bolted across. Now that you guys mention he missed getting the gears right it makes sense.

@viper @josh: Need not necessarily mean that the driver has to be bad. One tends to rev to the limits, once beyond it sure would be difficult to go to the next... u either wait for the rev to come down or opt for the one after the immediate next (and then again shift to a lower gear, this way one loses lesser time than when waiting for the rev to come down).
This does happen to many experienced/good drivers and yet doesn't make them any worse.
@raj: what you say sure happens with beginners (who still don't connect to it) and not oft with experienced drivers. The pattern's got nothing to do with what would have happened here.

Its indeed narrow, not just that but almost 40% of the track had an incline. All the cars and bikes were loosing a little bit of momentum there. All said, this was not at all an ideal drag strip nor was the organising bit any pleasing. The timing devices have their own set of screw-ups. All in all, the whole event if conducted again everything needs to be redone including the drag strip.

Anyways, it was a pretty pleasing finish for me. I secured 2 podiums. Got 1st place in the upto 165cc 4-stroke class and 2nd in the Upto 260cc 4-stroke Group B class. Lost to a modified comet in the 260cc class by barely 0.07 secs.
A few pics of my rides.

It had both downhill & uphill sections. Quite funny for a drag strip.

Their idea of nulling any (dis)advantage!

I don't think it would have been easier for them to get permission elsewhere. Not very safe, not the right track etc., but then they actually kick started it here and hope they get better everytime hence.

Joel,
congrats on your win, I am sure you would have won first place in the 260cc class had you had time to change your clutches.

Lesson learned, not to use worn out clutches for drags!!

Although the organisation had issues, I guess the advantage gained downhill would have been compensated by the uphill but I agree, it was not a ideal place to do a drag.

Cheers
Shrey
