More pictures of the W222. This car would surely give the XJ, A8 and 7 series a run for their money.

Don't think they are poorly lit shots. They are highlighting the Ambiance lighting feature of the interiors.

Cheers.

Does not look as radical as I had hoped it would be. Definitely better than the A8 and 7 series, but I feel the XJ looks a lot sexier.

The S class still looks classy unlike S8 or A8 which has that sport feel to its image. I dont think S has any competition to it or A8 for that matter. Both cater to different audience.

Default First official snap of stunning new S Class out in the open

The first official photo of the new Mercedes Benz S Class is out in the open. The photo was uploaded inadvertently by the company on its mobile website in Austria before being removed. Luckily french auto website blogautomobile.fr was able to publish the image. The car will have its official world premiere on May 15th.

The pictures make it clear that the German automaker is back in form with the design for the new S Class (codenamed W222). The smooth flowing, liquid design gives the car the right amount of grace and hides the bulk of what is a large car extremely well. As is usual since the launch of the first S Class back in 1972, the new car will unveil a host of brand new features. The new S Class sees the good old instrument cluster replaced with two 12.3" high-resolution color displays.

The new car is packed with sensors among them being, 6 radar units (3 front & 3 rear), 7 camera's and 12 ultrasonic parking sensors. The 2014 S-class is the world’s first automobile to use only Light Emitting Diode (LED) illumination technology. All lighting requirements for the headlight, tail-lamp, turn-indicators and interiors are provided by more than 190 LED's (they consume only 1/4th the power).

Driver aids are improved and include Distronic Plus, Active Lane-Keeping Assist, Attention Assist, Active Parking Assist, Brake Assist Plus, Pre-Safe Impulse, Pre-Safe Plus, Night View Assist Plus. In short the new S Class does almost everything but drive itself Ja (!) The S Class will be a technological tour-de-force and a peek into the future of the automobile, as was the case with its previous editions.

Default A peek into S-Class history while we await the newest addition

Tradition is an important thing in the auto business and 1 model that has continuously raised the bar is the Mercedes Benz S-Class. With the all new S-Class (W 222) just around the corner, we take a quick look back at what makes the S-Class, a car that has furthered the automobile in every sense of the term.

The first official use of the S-Class designation was in 1972 for the W 116 series (sold from 1972-1980). This was at a time when Mercedes Benz cars had notoriously long model lives. It was this model that in 1978, became the first series production vehicle in the world to be offered with 'ABS' (Anti-Lock Braking System). A sensation at the time of launch, 35 years later, even humble hatchbacks today feature ABS as standard. In keeping with Mercedes Integral Safety Concept, the 116 series came with a four-spoke safety steering wheel, fuel tank above rear axle (for protection in case of collision), pull-type safety door handles (back in fashion now), and dirt-deflecting taillights and dirt-deflecting side windows (!). The 450SEL 6.9 (286 BHP) with a 3 speed torque converter automatic transmission was the big daddy of the range when introduced in 1975. The 300 SD became the first series production car with a turbo-diesel engine in 1978. In all 473,035 units of the W 116 series S-Class were produced.

The next generation of the S-Class appeared in 1979, in the form of the W 126 series. The timeless design has aged remarkably well, even today, more than 40 years after the W 126 first made its debut. Keeping the safety focused credentials of the S-Class intact, the W 126 saw the debut of the airbag and seat belt tensioner in 1981 (passenger airbags were offered from 1988). It also became the first series production vehicle (worldwide) that met the new (at the time) offset crash requirements. It was also the first MB car to use deformable plastic bumpers (instead of chrome), that could withstand parking dents. Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) was on offer as special equipment from 1985 for V8 models. This model had a long production run from 1979 to 1991 (with sales of nearly 900,000 units).

1991 saw the arrival of the W 140 S-Class that arrived just as the age of excess that was the eighties came to a close. Suddenly, this incredibly over-engineered car was too big, too ostentatious and too uncaring of the environment. Nevertheless, it overwhelmed its competition by the sheer amount of technology on offer. The range topping 600 SE and 600 SEL, were the first series production Mercedes-Benz cars to feature a V12 engine (6.0 L, 48 valves, 408 BHP). The W 140 S-Class was packed to the gills with high technology; it featured Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard on the V12 and as an option on the V8's (from 1995). Brake Assist System (BAS) was added in 1996. Insulating double glazing on side windows (that reduced noise but increased weight), doors and boot lid which were closed electrically, Electronics linked via a CAN-bus and Side airbags for driver and front passenger (from 1996) could be found on the W 140. It also had the PARKTRONIC electronic parking aid (from 1995), Auto Pilot System (APS) navigation system (from 1995), TELE-AID emergency call system (from 1997) and LINGUATRONIC voice control system (from 1996).

By the time the new S-Class code named W 220 arrived in 1998, Mercedes had learned from the W 140 episode, the new model was all about lighter weight (out went the double glazed windows) and a sleeker, slimmer look with a drag coefficient of 0.27 (replacing the slab sided design on the W 140). The new car had window bags, rear side bags, passenger-side air bags and aluminium crash boxes in the front end and rear structure. As the range topping Mercedes, it came with the complicated new electronically controlled AIRMATIC air suspension, COMAND control and display system, KEYLESS GO keyless access and drive authorisation system and innovative DISTRONIC proximity-controlled cruise control system. 2002 saw the introduction of the PRE-SAFE preventive occupant safety system. Unfortunately, the W 220 S-Class did not continue with the bullet-proof reliability and rock solid quality of its predecessors (it aged rather quickly too).

Thus it was left to the W 221 S-Class that arrived in 2005 to stamp its presence as the 'Best Car in the World' and fortunately for Mercedes Benz it succeeded. The interiors were plush, futuristic and full of high quality materials, the technology was unquestionable and the engines were efficient and powerful. Safety has been an overriding concern for Mercedes Benz and the S-Class has always been the showcase for what the company could offer. There was active Night View Assist, advanced DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control and Brake Assist Plus (upgraded to the PRE-SAFE brake with autonomous partial braking in 2006). This was not all, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Speed Limit Assist were all meant to keep the driver on the road and not off it. In keeping with its eco-friendly credentials, the W 221 became the first S-Class to offer hybrid drive and the first series production car with a lithium-ion battery. It also became the first S-Class to offer a 4 cylinder engine (S 250 CDI from 2010). The W 221 was every inch an S-Class, offering elegant design, ground breaking technologies, outstanding comfort and an excellent range of engine and transmission options. It was also more eco-friendly, proving that high end automobile design could also be easier on the environment. That the bar will be moved higher by the W 222 S-Class is not in question, but by how much? is what remains to be seen. Thankfully, we will find out on May 15th

I just don't like how the cars produced today look like.
Am reminded of Ogden Nash's comment: 'Progress might have been all right once, but it has gone on too long'
In my opinion W220 & W221 pale in comparison to their predecessors.

Now this is one "modern" car that I'm really interested in!

The S-Class. The pioneer of automotive technology!

Very interested to see how the "MAGIC BODY CONTROL" (first touted on the F700 concept) works in reality. Also the lighting seems ground-breaking:
