Motortrend's Aug 2011 issue states that this will be the last year that the M3 will be available as a 4-door Sedan. But these renderings show a Sedan version for 2014?

There are predictions across the board that the new M3 will have 3 turbo's; 2 twin scroll and one electrically supercharged to produce around 450 HP, maybe a step down version of M5 motor. Can anyone confirm this? I know they are rumors but a 3rd turbo might be practical to counter the V8 loss especially after they are being introduced on the new M diesels.

It really saddens me that BMW are even considering the V6, but I guess that is not entirely their fault.

Just have a look at the history of the M3 to understand what I mean.

The first and second (E30 and E36) were arguably the best M3's ever. They were not ludicrously heavy vehicles (blame mod cons, safety kit and requirements for better and better everything from fuel emissions to comfort to space etc etc).

Also, today each and every car has to be quicker and better accelerating than the previous model. Carry on at this rate and soon our top end cars will need the acceleration of nitrous fuel dragsters.

I guess that means it is only inevitable that BMW go the simplest route to achieving more power which is more forced induction and bigger engines. Probably by the time we hit the next gen M3, it will have a bigger engine than the first or second gen M5's.

My view is that at some point we need to stop demanding more if we do not want to see this purity that we demand being lost.

OT: For me the best looking BMW car ever was the E36 3 series and the best looking of them all was the 325i convertible in that range

F30 BMW //M3 caught testing on video for the first time!

Whilst official technical details are being kept under wraps by the Bavarian automaker, rumors have surfaced that the 2014 M3 will be powered by a new tri-turbocharged 3.3-litre six-cylinder engine rated at around 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS). We have also been assured of lower running costs due to the higher foxus on very low fuel consumption.

Additionally, the newest M3 will lose a bit of weight in comparison to its predecessor with the use of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.

Full details are due to be released later in the year.

Oh c'mon they must draw a line somewhere !
I know emission yada yada norms etc. but these cars are supposed to be at the apex of performance. At this rate the next M3 might even end up with a (god forbid) superlatively tuned in-line 4
Keep the Eco-friendly variants separate and make them cleaner than ever but an M3 should be pure V8 fun !
Sure the V6 will be powerful & all but thats no substitute. Fact is , its sad news !
