Post Car-to-Car Communication

Here is an interesting article about the future of Inter-Car Communication. It explores the use of LTE (Long Term Evolution,a new fast telecom standard like 3G, 4G. for details about LTE refer to lteencyclopedia)

Now the article:

LTE To Save Planet

It looks like LTE may be able to help save the planet, at least a little, by easing traffic congestion and thus reducing emissions. It can help save a life or two, as well. The trick is using LTE as part of an automotive telematics system.

Ford Motor Company has been doing research on the uses of LTE in automotive applications. In addition to the typical streaming of video for in-car entertainment, however, Ford’s research has explored whether or not LTE can send a message quickly enough to be used in traffic safety applications.

It turns out, the answer is yes. Tests in Germany [2] using Vodaphone’s LTE network showed propagation delay times below 100 milliseconds.
The test involved one car making an emergency stopping maneuver and having the LTE network carry a warning message to a second car, which could then activate automatic braking of its own to avoid a collision. Avoiding collisions helps keep traffic flow moving, using less fuel and reducing emissions.

On a more personal level, it also looks like LTE can be part of a traffic safety system that will help save lives.

The work Ford is doing is part of the Cooperative Cars Extended (CoCarX) [3] project that aims to develop infrastructure for car-to-car communications. This is not the same as people in the car using their cell phones, though. This is the cars themselves talking to one another to share information. It may well be a step toward an automated highway where cars drive themselves and passengers just sit back and relax.

Of course, such a scenario is quite a ways off. For one thing, we need to get the LTE networks up and running and covering large areas. And there is a lot of work to do in ensuring the reliability of inter-auto communications so that safety isn’t compromised by a dropped “call.” Then we need to figure out who is going to pay the carriers for all this data traffic.

Still, it is an interesting idea and suggestive that LTE may end up enabling much more than mobile web surfing for consumers. Imagine all the things that can be done when commercial and consumer electronic systems connect to the WAN, then eliminate the wires and the requirement for a fixed location and you can start to get the picture. As profound a change in business and industry as the Internet brought about will be possible when LTE is ubiquitous enough to make the Internet accessible wirelessly from virtually anywhere.
The connected car that helps reduce traffic accidents and congestion is only the beginning.

I hope such a technology is triggered through cell phones which has got extensive tower network, for example by using SMS one could switch on AC, Refridgerator etc. Similarly breaking should be activated on cellphone compatability or technology, just a crazy idea or thought

In fact, LTE is a telecom standard i.e. it used for mobile phones, sms, mobile internet etc. It's available at least in Europe as far as i know since last year Nov. In India it will take time as we just getting very old 3G.
