Default Mercedes is the new king of the luxury segment in the US

http://ca.autoblog.com/2014/01/12/me...xury-car-race/

TLDR - Mercedes moves 312,534 cars up 14% from last year while BMW only sold 309,280. Looks like these numbers will further increase once the new C gets launched.

Honestly with the number of 3s I see around, I'm surprised BMW isn't on the top.

I agree with that! The no. of 3 and 5 series I see around, I really thought BMW was the top choice.

Let me make another observation- most of these luxury cars seem to be purchased by those of Asian origin. Native Americans seem to be warming up to the Hyundais while the South Asian contingent is at the Mercs and BMWs.

The sales burst towards the end of the year comes due the brand new CLA. More than 50% of buyers of the CLA have been first time Mercedes buyers. 29.9k starting price is the attraction, though the average transaction price is more than 35k. Smartly played Mercedes.

Some facts and figures (production and sales) from 1981 based on SMMT and Automobil Revue, Berne chart that appeared in Daily Express Guide to World Cars in 1982.

Vehicle Sales Figures from markets abroad-picture-203.jpg

China is at the bottom of the list, while India is fourth from the base. The countries listed to the left are not very legible - sorry, domestic scanner limitations! These are listed as from top to bottom Japan, USA,West Germany,France,USSR,Italy, Great Britain,Canada, Spain, Brazil,Australia, Mexico, South Africa, Poland, Sweden, Belgium,Czechoslovakia, GDR (East Germany),Yugoslavia, Argentina,Romania, Netherlands, Venezuela,South Korea,India,Turkey,Philippines and Republic of China.

Vehicle Sales Figures from markets abroad-picture-201.jpg

Above: A beautiful analyses of the situation as in 1982-83 by David Benson, Managing Editor, Daily Express, U.K.

It was the start of the British car industry's decline, then. Japanese cars were invading the American and European markets. The chart shows Japan on the top as the largest maker of cars in the world. This was due to the Big Three of the US still relying on gas guzzlers for their bread and butter. By then, many Japanese companies had started to set up assembly and manufacturing units in the US and U.K..

Default BMW Global Sales Figures for 2013

Thought this will be useful info on BMW Car Sales Worldwide for the Team BHP Members, looks like they are actually increasing sales growth year after year, hence it seems astonishing seeing their sales growth dip in India, Cheers

Unsold cars in lots and other places.

Authenticity of article and numbers are rather suspect, but just wanted to post it here for the sake of the pics - first spotted after the recession of 2008

Default Bentleys and Bugattis Selling Much, Much Faster Than Hondas & Hyundais

The latest international news on the automobile front is that Bentleys and Bugattis are selling " much, much" faster than Hondas and Hyundais.

In 2014, the U.S. market recorded movement of 16.5 million cars and now the prediction is for 17 million for 2015. Even with the snow battering large tracts of the Eastern U.S., the car buyer's movement to car showrooms seems largely unaffected.

The newsreport says "According to Bloomberg, sales of six-figure vehicles grew more than five times as fast as sales of mainstream cars and trucks last year, and there's little indication that the segment is slowing."

The world economy is in quite good health, as car sales are barometers for the economy and for the respective nation's GDP on a high. Moreover, luxury car sales are a better barometer to directly feel the pulse of a nation's economy, than the mass market cars. The Great Depression of 1929-30 and the recession that followed in the early 1930's proved to be a cemetery for some of the then luxury car makers. Bugatti founder, Ettore Bugatti's dream project, the Bugatti Royale (only 6 units were built and all have survived) one of the finest engineered cars of the world till date, from the early 1930's, was launched and out of the six ever built, many were unsold. Some other luxury car makers perished in the early 1930's.

In the current scenario, the US economy's strength powers and propels most of the other economies of the world. That is, if the US economy sneezes, the stock markets the world over catch cold.

But TOUCHWOOD ! The going is great as of now.

Interesting article but i think it missed a key reason? Falling gas prices! Large vehicles are back in demand in US due to cheaper gas. You'd think that people who buy Bugattis and Bentleys dont really care about gas prices, which could be true too.

But cheaper gas has definitely slowed down the sales growth of the more economical cars.

Also, the title could have been worded better. It's the sales growth that is much faster than the actual sales. Even the article hints about the same in its last bullet point.
