Here's a related thread (Stolen cars in India). A certain number of Supercars in India have dubious backgrounds. As long as the price is good, buyers couldn't be bothered. Not atleast till they visit an authorised service station and their VIN number flashes the truth!

The sad truth is that too many people are not that concerned about provenance when the price is right.

Reminds me of a story in South Africa. A guy had bought a Merc at a good price from some shady dealer and decided that he eventually wanted another one of them for his daughter so went back to the same dealer and requested it.

A few days later his daughter was driving the Merc when she was car-jacked and IIRC shot and killed, in the process. The dealer then called him up a few days later to say he had a car available for him. Now comes the kicker. When he went to check out the car (remember he needed a car as his car was stolen) it turned out to be the same car.
