Default 6x6 Merc G63 AMGs spotted heading to the Middle East

Two 6x6 Merc G63 AMGs has been spotted heading to the Mid East (no surprise).

The custom made Gs seems to have been fancied up by a rich Arab who might have come across the 6x6 diesel Gs used by the Aussie and Swedish troops.

It is powered by the same 5.5L Twin-Turbo V8 as the normal G63 and rides on Hutchinson rims with off-road tires and comes with Öhlins dampers and a tire pressure control system.

Usually, you add an axle for load carrying capability.

But the above specimen seems to be purely for indulgence.

Cheers

I am guessing the extra wheels will help while driving on soft surfaces like sand and snow. The extra wheels will not only provide more traction but the vehicles contact surface area will also increase ( due to the extra wheels) there by reducing the possibility of getting bogged down in soft surface. In this case, Sand.

These could have been ordered for Tourism related activities also, i.e Sand dune adventures.

But, why a permanent European registration plate (German or Italian, not clear from the pics) ?

Quoted from the "carscoop.blogspot.com"

Arab sheiks watch out because Mercedes-Benz is coming (once again…) after your petrol dollars. If the new twin-turbocharged V8 and V12 AMG versions of the refreshed 2013 G-Class aren't special or capable enough, the brand with the star has prepared a zanier iteration of its classic off-roader, aptly named the G63 AMG 6x6, but feel free to call it "das tier"…
In case you didn’t notice it in the pictures, the "6x6" refers to the new model's six driven wheels. Benz didn't exactly design the SUV from scratch, as it is based on a special military version of the G320 CDI made for the Australian army and which is in use since 2011, according to an Autoweek report.

While the civilian model keeps the military G's all-wheel drive system with five (!) differential locks offering 100 percent lockup of all six wheels and which are controlled via buttons on the dash, Mercedes replaced the 3.0-liter diesel engine and 5sp automatic with a twin-turbo'd 5.5-liter V8 pushing out 536-horses and 560 lb-ft of torque connected to a 7G-tronic seven-speed auto.

The four-seater model adopts a pickup-truck body that measures 231.3 inches (5,867mm) long, 83.1 inches (2,111mm) wide and 87.0 inches (2,209mm) tall, or 43.5 inches (1,105mm) longer, 8.9 inches (226mm) wider and 10.7 inches (272mm) taller than the regular G63 AMG 4x4.

Other interesting facts include a huge ground clearance of 18.1 inches (460mm), approach and departure angles of 52 degrees (+16 over the regular G63 AMG) and 54 degrees (+27) respectively, while the 6x6 truck tips the scales at 8,322-pound or 3,775 kilos. The truck runs on 37-inch wheels with a bead-plate design all around.

Performance and fuel economy numbers are not available yet, but Mercedes head of G-class development, Axel Harries, told Autoweek magazine that the G63 AMG 6x6 will complete the 0-62 mph (100km/h) sprint in less than six seconds, have an electronically governed top speed of 100mph (160km/h) and return a fuel economy of around 13mpg (18lt/100km or 15.6mpg UK).

He added that Mercedes plans to build 20 to 30 trucks per year, with the G63 AMG 6x6 to be the brand's second most expensive car in the range behind the $457,000 (€350,000) SLS Electric Drive.

In action!

This is once crazy beast. I wonder if having 2 wheels at the rear will result in substantially more rear end grip : ?

Default Six Wheeled Mercedes G63AMG: Video Included

Source: Motor Authority

Just in case the regular G63 AMG from Mercedes-Benz wasn’t extreme enough, the company will soon be offering this six-wheeled version.

The vehicle is built alongside the regular G Class range at Magna Steyr's operations in Graz, Austria, and was originally developed for the Australian military back in 2011

The head of development for the Mercedes-Benz G Class line, Axel Harries, said pricing for the vehicle hasn’t been announced but interested buyers can expect to pay no more than the 350,000 euro ($457,000) sticker of the SLS AMG Electric Drive.

The G63 AMG 6x6 officially goes on sale in October. Currently, Mercedes is predicting sales of between 20 and 30 units annually.

What a vehicle! It will become the most desirable 4 -wheeler..., err 6 - wheeler for any off-roader. Loved the video.

Great video! But the vehicle looks like a Tata pickup with 6 wheels. Nothing exciting in the looks department.

When I saw the video for the 1st time I was quite confused. What were they trying to communicate the car as? A thorough bread offroader (shown extensively after almost 1/2 time) or a 6 wheeled race car on sand (beginning of the video).

But then I saw it for the 2nd time & understood that they would like to showcase it as a Race Car For the Off Roads. This is an all new segment and customer category that MB is looking to tap into. However in the looks department the car looks quite dated and in the price tag comparison its going to be real tough fight.

Suggested Tagline: The New Mercedes 6x6, a car with the Ugly Duckling Syndrome

To be honest i kind of like this vehicle only when it is in action (in the video / the above shots) Otherwise when standstill the rear looks too forced on to the car.

Lets wait how other manufacturers take to this (We may end up having more 6x6 production variants)

There already are a few 6x6 conversion Fortuners/Hilux
