CAR magazine scoop : Rolls-Royce reportedly mulling v16-Powered Super Roadster for 2017 and a Luxury SUV

The latest CAR magazine (out Wednesday 20 February, 2013) is breaking the story, based on detailed information and interviews.

News of the radical Rolls-Royce 4X4 plans emerged in an interview with BMW board member and Rolls-Royce chairman Harald Krüger.

CAR editor Phil McNamara said: ‘Rolls-Royce is thinking the unthinkable. Its advanced design team has sketched radical proposals for two prospective models: one is a Rolls-Royce crossover sports utility vehicle. The other is a two-seat roadster.’

He said: ‘The BMW and Rolls management are hotly debating the character of a Rolls sports utility vehicle, with two different proposals under review, called Coach and Pullman.

Coach, as the name implies, is solid and stately, square and slab-sided, substantial and supreme.

Pullman is influenced by legendary first-class trains like the Royal Scotsman or the Orient Express. Lower than Coach as well as longer and sportier, Pullman would feature an airy glass roof, a split rear lid made to measure for exclusive tailgate parties and an extended rear overhang.'

They have illustrated the vehicles thru computer-generated images.

The roadster looks beautiful.

Lovely looking shape indeed.

Fans and critics will alike criticise the radical crossover route taken by Rolls, but as everyone knows if launched, this will be a blockbuster sales success(in luxury car terms), better if they launch it as it is in the concept. Looks sweet and more stately than the Bentley xover concept.

Yes indeed the roadster looks great but that would have been relatively easy to design as they already had the coupe.

But full marks for the design of the SUV looks brilliant IMO

A 4x4 SUV from Rolls-Royce clap:. Great design, can't wait to see an ultra luxury SUV doing offroading :D.

The V16 idea came in from their spare engines that were originally designed for the Phantom and due to the price restriction they went in with the v12. In the Movie Johnny English 2 the Phantom coupe has the V16 engine. The Roadster rendering does look promising and i hope it turns out better in the flesh. The Suv is a big no no from the rendering..and according to me will dilute the brand instead of keeping it Niche.

Adding to Speedy's post here is a video on the same:

Interesting scoop. I feel the suv move was inevitable but the mock-ups do look neat and promising, unlike Bentley's take. As for the roadster, it looks great but clearly the design won't make it to production looking like that as it doesn't look very production viable, more of a concept. Though I'm sure any developments in this direction will take a while.

Rolls-Royce SUV is now under active consideration. :thumbs up

Rolls Royce SUV confirmed

Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Muller-Ötvös confirms SUV could form part of future line-up.

The news that Rolls-Royce is even considering such a vehicle signifies a marked shift in attitude at the firm, which has previously said it has no reason to launch such a car. However, customer enquiries, the booming and consistent sales in the segment and potential rivals in the sector from Range Rover, Bentley and Lamborghini have kick-started plans

TopGear says : Get ready for the Rolls-Royce SUV!

Peter Schwarzenbauer, the BMW board member in charge of Rolls-Royce (as well as Mini and motorbikes) told Top Gear: "There are long-term independent studies that say half the world car market – 50 per cent of everything – will be crossovers and SUVs. So it's our responsibility to look into it. We are seriously analysing a Rolls-Royce in the SUV area."

But Schwarzenbauer won't say it's decided. "We have to know it would still be a true Rolls-Royce. If we're not convinced it is, then I will not ask the board for permission to go forward with it. So the question is, does it fit to the Rolls-Royce brand? They had the same discussions at BMW before they made the first X5. No doubt at Porsche before the Cayenne too."

Rolls-Royce SUV to launch in 2017

Design work is under way on Rolls-Royce's first ever SUV, which is likely to cost more than £200,000 when it goes on sale.

The Rolls-Royce off-roader is unlikely to appear much before late 2017, but that does mean that it won’t be far behind the new Bentley SUV in arriving on the market.
