Default Audi lifts the veils off the MQB-based A3 and S3 sedans

Mod Note: Team-BHP's Audi A3 Review has been taken live at this link (Audi A3 : Official Review). Please continue the discussion over on the review thread.

Audi has released photos and information on the A3 Sedan and its high-performance version, the 300hp S3 Sedan.

Quote:
...the compact sedan is 4.46-meters (14.63 ft) long and has a 2.64-meter (8.66 ft) wheelbase. The car is 1.80-meters (5.91 ft) wide or 11mm (0.43 in) wider than the A3 Sportback, while its height (1.42 meters/4.66 ft) is 9mm (0.35 in) lower than that of the five-door model. Trunk capacity is 425 liters (15 cubic feet).

The design is typical Audi, with the signature headlights identical to those on the A3 and A3 Sportback, and a profile that the carmaker describes as “a cross between a classic three-box concept and the coupé philosophy.”

At launch in Europe, the A3 Sedan will be available with three four-cylinder engines – the 1.4 TFSI and 1.8 TFSI gasoline units and the 2.0 TDI diesel. The 1.4 TFSI develops 138hp (140PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) and is fitted with the COD (cylinder on demand) system that deactivates two cylinders. Combined fuel consumption is 4.7 liters/100 km (50.05 US mpg), with CO2 emissions being 109 g/km. 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 8.4 seconds, and top speed is 217 km/h (134.84 mph).

The 1.8 TFSI delivers 177hp (180PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) and offers the A3 Sedan an average fuel economy of 5.6 liters/100 km (42 US mpg), equivalent to 129 g CO2/km. 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.3 seconds, with top speed being 235 km/h (146 mph).

Finally, the 2.0 TDI produces 148hp (150PS) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. It is the most economical engine in the A3 Sedan range, with only 4.1 liters/100 km (57.37 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of 107 g/km. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) takes 8.7 seconds, while top speed is 220 km/h (136.7 mph). Depending on the engine, either a manual six-speed gearbox or the dual-clutch S tronic is used.

The interior of the A3 Sedan (the same from the A3 Sportback) is available with an array of options and materials. There’s the new modular infotainment system (MIB), consisting of MMI Navigation plus, a 64 GB hard drive, DVD drive, whole-word voice control and a high-resolution 7-inch-screen.

The A3 Sedan will be available in Europe late this summer, for a base price of around €25,000 ($32,150) for the 1.4 TFSI model.

Audi S3 Sedan: 300 horsepower, 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds

Just like the S3 and S3 Sportback, the high-performance all-wheel-drive S3 Sedan is powered by the 2.0-liter TFSI engine developing 296hp (300PS) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 4.9 seconds with the S tronic and 5.3 seconds with the manual gearbox. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). Combined fuel consumption is 6.9 liters/100 km (34.10 US mpg) with the S tronic or 7 liters (33.6 US mpg) with the manual.

Looks like a typical Audi. Wonder what was there for them to hide under the veil. It is an A4 at 75% view . Glad to know that unlike the A4, the DSG box is not reserved for just the top end quattro versions.

With its compact dimensions, this car will attract a lot of young buyers. I wish they bring an MT version of this car to India and price it economically. There is a dearth of sporty sedans in the 25L price bracket with manual transmissions.

Those fuel consumption figures are a bit hard to digest!

Superb!! I prefer this to the quirky CLA. It defiantly should give it a run for its money.
Hope Audi India is quick to bring this in CKD form ASAP! They defiantly should keep the S3 on offer too, bmw 328i buyers would jump on it.

This new A3 is very attractive to me : o.
Does anyone know if they will be launching it in India anytime soon? If so, At what price point do you reckon?. The pricing mentioned in the OP makes it look like it will be the same as A4 if CBU.
Can't wait!

Audi has a done a marvelous job for the A3. It consists of all the right elements of the A4 sedan which people have come to love. This will be a hit for people aspiring to bring home a European make but couldn't afford the 30L + price tag!

Now, last I heard Audi wasn't planning on bringing the A3 to India and the reason given was that it would dilute their brand. I don't know to what extent would Audi hold up on their words, because they know this product is already a born winner if they decide to launch it here, of course if priced right.

Default Audi A3 back to the future

Now, here's an interesting perspective on the new Audi A3!

http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20130...-to-the-future

I used to have an early company Audi A4. It was a very nice car.
I'm becoming a bit of an old git, or so my kids tell me. I rarely like new cars, always prefering the previous model. So maybe there is hope for me after all!

I find the exteriors better then the weird Merc CLA but the interior design of the CLA / A class is better then the A3. Confusion continues!

Default Audi bets big on the A3 sedan

The Audi A3, an entry level luxury sedan from the German luxury car maker owned by the Volkswagen group, has hit the production line at Gyor, Hungary. The car will begin appearing at showrooms in Europe over the next few months. In India, the Audi A3 could be positioned as the least priced model in the German luxury car maker's line up, as a foil to the likes of the Mercedes Benz CLA sedan (also launching in 2014) and the BMW 1-Series hatchback (due for a second half 2013 launch). Audi is bullish about the prospects of the A3 sedan. According to the car maker's own estimates, the A3 sedan could mop up 50% of the total sales coming from the A3 line.

The sales for the A3 sedan will be driven by markets such as China, the United States and India (to a smaller extent) as car buyers in these markets are said to prefer sedans over hatchbacks. In India, sedans have a snob value that hatchbacks cannot match, at least for now. A case in point is the big demand for compact sedans, which are essentially hatchbacks to which boots are attached. In that light, the Audi A3 sedan, if priced close to the likes of the BMW 1-Series and the Mercedes Benz A-Class hatchbacks, will definitely enjoy an image advantage due to the sheer virtue of it being a sedan.

The other car in the A3 line is the hatchback version, dubbed the Sportback. In future, the Audi A3 sedan and Sportback are expected to be joined by electric and CNG variants of the hatchback. Aimed at younger buyers seeking to sample what the Audi brand has to offer, the A3 sedan that will be launched in India could feature two engine options: a 1.8 Liter TSI turbo petrol engine (180 Bhp-250 Nm) and a 2 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine (150 Bhp-320 Nm). Both engines are revised versions of motors that already exist in the Volkswagen group's engine line up. A 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox will drive the front wheels of the A3 sedan in India.

Europe will get another petrol engine option for the A3 sedan, in the form of the 1.4 Liter TSI turbo petrol motor. This engine (140 Bhp-250 Nm) serves as the entry level petrol engine for the A3 sedan range. Notably, the engine gets cylinder deactivation technology, a fuel conserving-tail pipe emission cutting feature, that shuts off 2 cylinders out of 4 during low engine load conditions. Audi India, as confirmed by its Managing Director Mr Michael Perschke, has plans of launching the A3 sedan in India during 2014. The Audi A3 range is based on the Volkswagen group's MQB platform. In that light, the Audi A3 sedan will be the second car based on the MQB platform to be launched in India, after the 2013 Skoda Octavia, which bows in later this year.

The sedan styling should work in favour of the A3, India still prefers the boot as a sign of prestige and a lot of buyers of D segment would like to upgrade to the Audi badge.

Is there a 7 speed DSG that is mated to the 2.0L engine? I think the CVT will be retained on the consideration of part sharing with the A4 diesel.

I don't expect the alloy wheel design to make it here, the boring 7 spoke will be what Audi offers, the ads of course will have snazzy alloys to fool would be customers, just like the current A4 and A6 adverts do.

In India, Hatch < Sedan < SUV. I wonder if entry level luxury sedan sales would be cannibalized by their own entry level luxury SUV.

It would be interesting to have a comparison test drive between A3 1.8 TSI, and Octavia 1.8 TSI at a later stage, especially to check the driveability factor. If A3 has a manual transmission option (which is unlikely), then even better.

I wonder why would Audi have a newer 1.8 TSI engine with higher power output (180 BHP) in A3, than the 1.8 TFSI engine (168 BHP) in A4. Of course the torque figures for A4 TFSI are better.

Looks good. I personally prefer the CLA's design. Well, Mercedes has taken the beginners' advantage by launching the A-Class before 1 series from BMW. Hope they dont do the same to AUDI by launching CLA before A3.

Also, with so much price overlapping one would have a plenty of Germans as a choice in 20L-30L bracket.
