Default Volkswagen Polo GTE: Plug-in Hybrid Hot Hatch

The German automaker will introduce a natural gas powered Polo at the end of the year, followed in 2015 by its first plug-in hybrid of a city-friendly size. It could be badged as the "GTE", the third model of a hot hatch family to include a new GTI with a bigger 1.8-liter engine and an all-wheel drive Polo R model.

Adding that tech to the Polo is going to be difficult, since the car is not based on the MQB platform, but the older PQ25.

A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery will be fitted under the rear seats and in the place of the spae wheel, providing about 8 kWh of juice on a charge. Adding about 120 kilograms to the weight of the car might affect its driver dynamics, but the extra punch of the electric motor will make this an excellent sprinter.

Speaking of power, the electric motor will have the same 60 kW / 82 PS as it does in the e-Up!. It will be accompanied by a yet unknown TSI turbo with capacity somewhere between 1.0 and 1.4 liters to provide a total output of 160 PS. 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds will be accompanied by claimed fuel economy figures in the region of 2 l/100km.
