Talking Volvo's new 4 Cylinder: 2.0 liters, TRIPLE boost & 450 BHP!

Volvo has recently released the specs to it's latest and what appears to be the greatest 4 cylinder electric power train creation till date. And get this, Not only does it show off its triple turbos, but also will make “no less than” 450 horsepower on tap, it’s mighty interesting.

"The new High Performance Drive-E Powertrain" as it is called for now, incorporates two parallel turbochargers fed by a third electric turbo-compressor. What the third turbo does is, instead of feeding the cylinders directly spools up the twin turbochargers, working together with a dual fuel pump pressurized to 250 bar. Eliminating the exhaust driven turbo and using an electrically driven turbo instead, eliminates turbo lag according to Volvo. No sure of the "Eliminating lag" part, but on paper it does sound promising.

“When we launched the Drive-E powertrain family, our aim was to deliver the most advanced four-cylinder engines in the industry based on emissions and fuel consumption relative to performance and drivability,” Volvo R&D chief Peter Mertens said.

At present, the engine is still in the concept phase but Volvo is working closely with suppliers as well as its performance arm Polestar to further develop the technology.

Just wonder the longevity of components in such highly boosted engines, does it really make sense extracting so much from so little?

If it is strictly meant for race purposes, then yes. Makes a heck lot of sense. For use in a road going car? Not so sure.

But as rumored, this particular line of engines will be going into different vehicles such as the newly launched XC 90 and the engine options will be the same but will be offered with various states of tune. So i guess we'll just have to wait and watch how this turns up on the long run

The Mitsubishi Evolution FQ400 made 403 hp from a 2L engine - in the road going version - using a single turbocharger.

But it sufferred from massive turbo lag.

With 3 turbos - Volvo could effectively have a massive boost while not compromising on the driveability as well. I'd say - bring it on!

It pretty much did! I remember Jezza test driving an Evo VII on Top Gear few seasons back sporting massive turbos and complimentary heavy turbo lag. Even though it produced roughly ~700whp, he yawned his way through until the boost hit. And yes, the duration of that yawn was very very long
