Default 2016 Chevrolet Volt sedan and Bolt EV concept revealed!

Chevrolet has unveiled the 2016 Volt plug-in hybrid sedan. The 2016 Volt gets a second-generation Voltec extended range electric vehicle (EREV) propulsion system that is up to 12 percent more efficient and around 45 kgs lighter than the first-generation drive unit. The Voltec system includes the battery, drive unit, range-extending engine and power electronics. The battery capacity is up to 18.4 kWh and the battery itself is lighter by over 9 kgs. The number of cells have decreased from 288 to 192 as the result of some "revised chemistry".

The electric drive system works in tandem with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that makes 100 bhp at 5600 rpm. The combined fuel economy comes in at around 17.50 km/l. On electric power alone, the Volt can travel for up to 80 kms. This is an evident improvement from the current generation Volt's 17.1-kWh battery that can provide a range of 61 kms with a combined fuel economy of 15.73 km/l. The car does the 0-100 km/h sprint in just under 9 seconds.

Standard safety features include a rear-view camera and ten air-bags. Additionally the Volt can be equipped with lane keep assist with lane departure warning, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert with following distance indicator, front automatic braking, and advanced park assist with front and rear park assist. GM says, the expanded use of high-strength steel throughout the body structure improves strength and reduces weight.

The 2016 Volt goes on sale in the second half of 2015.

Chevrolet also revealed the Bolt EV concept. The 5-door hatchback concept has been built using lightweight materials, including aluminium, magnesium, carbon fibre and even woven mesh. Technical specifications have not been stated, but GM claims the Bolt can manage a range of around 322 kms.

Exterior cues like vented rear fenders supposedly help improve the Bolt's range. Styling features include swept back LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, a frosted glass roof, black cladding along the side skirting, bumpers and wheel arches, chrome door handles, turn signal integrated ORVMs and wide windows.

The car also gets the Bolt EV Connect app which can allow a smartphone to act as the key fob and incorporate the concept automatic park-and-retrieval technology. This technology enables the Bolt to park itself and drive back to the owner as well. The car gets a 10-inch-diagonal capacitive-touch screen to work with the concept Bolt EV Connect app as well as display other information.

Prices for the production Bolt are expected to begin around $30,000 ( INR 18.70 Lakh approx.)

Nice. I'm sure that they will change the name in India if at all there's a remote possibility of a launch here, to obviously distinguish it from its poorer Tata Motors' namesake

Love this glimpse of the future. I have fitted two 15 amp sockets at my parking spots in the building basement in the hope that one day a plug-in will adorn the parking spot.

They cannot use Bolt name in India even if they want to since Tata already took the rights for that in India.

Similar example: Ritz is known as Splash everywhere else but in India, Ford already registered Splash as their registered trademark. So Maruti had to rename it to Ritz when launching it in India.

Why can't Chevy bring the Volt sedan to India ?
Toyota Prius is enjoying the monopoly in India of being the only full fledged Hybrid sedan.

If Chevy could bring the Volt to India, this could trigger some competition.

I wish to see the posh hotels in India move from Toyota Camry / Mercs / Beemrs to such kind of Hybrid cars.
Would be a nice show off for hotel guests to see that these hotels care for the environment.

When will our automotive scene evolve ? Or are we going to be stuck with only E20 ?

GM's domestic sales are failing terribly even with their regular passenger vehicles. Bringing in a car like the Volt really wouldn't help their case IMO. Electric cars/plug in hybrids are still catching on in more developed markets. It's a bit too soon for them to bring it in India, given that even the Prius is more of a halo product itself.

On the flipside, India is the ideal market to sow the EV seed in, since it's still relatively young. However, I highly doubt GM will be the brand to do it. It will take a few gutsy brands to bring in EVs and Mahindra seems to be the only one putting in a genuine effort. Unless govt policy gets openly partial towards "greener" cars, manufacturers won't have any incentive.

The current passenger segment is lagging due to lazy management. I haven't such much of ads of GM products. I haven't got any calls from GM for free monsoon or winter checks ups. I haven't got calls from GM for any CSI events. Basically the management is sleeping after getting fat paychecks. Such sorry condition.

GM needs a boom if they want to stay in India. I wish they could bring a fresh product (Volt) for the market and could heavily advertise / market it.
This should open a new lucrative segment.
This would bring in confidence of some buyers and people could once again look at GM as one of the respected and trusted brands.

But like you said, only gusty brands can do so. Mahindra being a home brand has taken the risk and is doing fairly well with the E20.
Big brands have still not taken the courage to foray simply because of the ineffective push from Govt. That is where India is lagging terribly and end customers are deprived of world class products.
The Govt is all happy with are Green Autos running on LPG / CNG.

It's interesting that while most brands are shying away from offering more affordable hybrid products in the Indian market, BMW is counting on the super expensive i8 to make a mark at the top end segment.

Chevy Volt has been a sales disaster in the US. The main problem is the 35 mile only electric range. After that ,it runs on regular gasoline. Which practically is useless in the US.

But in places like India 35 miles is a lot of distance. The problem in India would be the electric charging . With India's erratic electric supply, this car would again mostly run on gasoline. This negates the very purpose of buying this car.

Plus the upfront new car purchase price will be very high. So many better cars at that price range. Plus Chevy service in India I read from these forums is a joke. GM went bankrupt in US - their main market - cant expect them to be a game change or leader in other markets ! Also, the expertise to repair these cars would not be easy to get in India especially for such a low volume niche model.
