Default Malaysia: Proton & Suzuki partnership

Malaysia's struggling national carmaker Proton is joining forces with Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp. in its latest bid to boost sales.

The collaboration will allow Proton access to Suzuki’s models, platforms, powertrain and automotive technology, while the Japanese carmaker will provide specific technical assistance for the selected products and scope.

Proton will be developing a small compact car with the help of Suzuki, up to 1.0 litre in engine displacement and in a segment where Proton is currently not present.

Quote:
What will be the extent of the collaboration? Will it be a Proton platform and a Suzuki engine (chairman Tun Dr Mahathir made passing mention of 660 cc, 850 cc and 1.0 litre engine sizes), or a full rebadge of an existing Suzuki model thatís not sold in Malaysia?

Quote:
Both are possibilities, that the Tanjung Malim plant will be utilised in this collaboration, and that we could see the finished product as early as 2016

As long as the CKD kits are exported from India, its good for us and increases our exports.

Else, its just a news

Proton aims to build 60k to 100k cars a year for Suzuki.

Kits could be supplied from India, and could boost Maruti Suzuki's export revenues.

Quote:
“It will not be a pure Suzuki car. Components or parts may come from Suzuki, but we will build and design our own car which will be sold in Malaysia and also foreign markets.

Quote:
The LA grants Proton the rights to CKD manufacture and sell a Suzuki model under its own brand, and numerous mentions of “small, compact cars” and smaller engine segment vehicles” fuels speculation that Proton wants to develop its first A-segment city car to challenge Perodua’s hot-selling Axia.
Quote:
“Suzuki is not small. They produce three million cars a year and have been number three in Japan for seven consecutive years, after Toyota and Honda. They have chosen a different path, going into developing countries instead of developed countries. They are big in India, producing 1.2 million cars and 800,000 cars in Japan

Proton-Suzuki JV – first model due end-2016, more to come.

Suzuki will provide specific technical assistance for the joint products while taking advantage of Proton’s larger distribution and service network for its “rebranded cars”

Suzuki has already ceased sales of its vehicles, as well as production at DRB Hicom’s plant in Pekan.Proton will access Suzuki’s talents, models, platforms, powertrains and other technology.

Quote:
The collaboration will also see the assimilation of good and best in class practices. As Suzuki exits the Malaysian market, it displays genuine commitment to make this collaboration successful according to the agreed terms. In that, Proton is honoured to be part of its several successful partnerships worldwide and we look forward to a more fruitful journey in our transformation initiatives to increase market share

Suzuki's Ertiga to Proton-badged Suzuki Ertiga in Malaysia!

Quote:
The confirmation of the Ertiga as a fruit of Proton’s collaboration with Suzuki came earlier today from Indonesia. News reports from the republic quoted local Suzuki arm PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) saying that the Ertiga will be exported to Malaysia in knocked down form, from the second quarter of 2016.

Suzuki may become Proton R&D partner - trying to replicate Maruti - Suzuki India success story!

Quote:
While the current Proton-Suzuki partnership is only involved in distribution of the formerís products and the rebadging of the latterís, it could eventually expand into a deeper research and development collaboration
Quote:
the partnership could just work in Protonís favour. According to him, a technology partnership like this would open up an opportunity to leverage on new technologies and develop products for specific market niches.

ďGoing forward, in return for sharing its technology capabilities with Proton, Suzuki can use Protonís platform to grow its presence in Southeast Asia
Quote:
The publication gives the example of Suzukiís partnership with Indiaís Maruti, which first existed as a licence and joint venture agreement in 1982. It added like Maruti, like Proton, was also facing problems with public perception, but has now entered a more premium segment through its Nexa dealerships, which sell the more expensive Baleno and S-Cross. Suzuki now owns just over 56% of Maruti Suzuki India.
